BREWSTER, MA - Just when the weather began to cool off in New England, the Post University men's golf team heated up as it withstood a furious rally from Southern New Hampshire to win the Division II New England Championship this past weekend at Port Captain's/Starboard in Brewster, Massachusetts.
One could say that Post "struck while their irons were hot", as it opened an 11- stroke lead after the first day, and held off SNH to finish with a total of 632 (313, 319) for a three-stroke victory. It was the second time Post has won the 74-year old tournament in the six-year history of the Eagles' program. Post also won the event in 2005.
Jamie Blake finished off a strong fall season by shooting rounds of 78 and 77 for a total of 155, which was good for second place in Division II and 25th overall among all golfers (Division I, II and III). Lee Wanklyn's 157 (76, 81) put him in a tie for third place in DII, and 35th overall.
"We didn't play as well as we could have on the second day, but it was good enough to win," Post Head Coach Pete Stevens said. "This tournament has a tremendous amount of history and is a very prestigious one to win. It was a great way to wrap up our fall season."
In addition to capturing the Division II crown, the Eagles team score was good enough for a ninth-place finish overall in a field of 42 that included some of the finest Division I programs in the Northeast.
