STAC Women's Soccer Drops 5-2 Decision to Jefferson

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team dropped a 5-2 non-conference decision to Jefferson University on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.

STAC falls to 2-6 overall, while Jefferson improves to 5-2-1 on the year.

Gianna Garozzo and Alexa Callahan each tallied a pair of goals, while Mia Ferrara add to the Rams totals on the scoreboard. Jasmine Blue (1st) and Sarai Rodriguez (1st) netted goals for the maroon and gold on the afternoon.

In net, STAC keepers Catalena Robson and Haley Liss each saw time between the pipes and combined to stop 11 of 16 shots faced. On the other end of the field, Liv Riddel made four stops on six shots, before Julia Rath came on in relief for the final six plus minutes of the match.

How it Happened

  • 10th Minute - A free kick by Abby Lytle was sent into the box, where a Carly Yeager scoop and shot was initially stopped by Spartans keeper Catalena Robson. However, a long rebound then popped out to Gianna Garozzo at the top of the 18 where she fired a seed past an outstretched Robson to put the Rams in the lead, 1-0.
  • 28th Minute - Jefferson's pass back to its keeper, Liv Riddel was immediately challenged and stolen by Jasmine Blue, who then danced around the netminder and tucked a soft shot inside the right post to tie the match at 1-1.
  • 29th Minute - On a through ball to the Rams Nikki Dedes, which was initially stopped by a sliding Robson, the rebound popped loose to a wide open Mia Ferrara for the easy tap-in goal to give Jefferson the 2-1 advantage.
  • 34th Minute - Off of a corner kick Mia Ferrara, the ball would riccochet off of the knee of Gianna Garozzo and to the back of the net for Garozzo's second goal of the match to make it 3-1 for the visitors.
  • 37th Minute - A defensive miscue by Jefferson allowed Sarai Rodriguez to step up and swipe the ball, going one-on-one with Liv Riddel. Rodriguez fired a shot to the center of the net to cut the STAC deficit to 3-2.
  • 49th Minute - On a penalty kick opportunity by Devin Sullivan, which was saved by Catalena Robson, a loose rebound would find the foot of teammate Alexa Callahan who put the ball to the back of the net to extend the Rams lead to 4-2.
  • 70th Minute - The final goal of the match would come via a Spartans turnover at midfield. Devin Sullivan would dribble down the far side of the field and cut to the net inside the box, sending a high feed to Alexa Callahan for the header, beating STAC keeper Haley Liss to make it a 5-2 game.
