Holy Family Shuts Down No. 14 Bentley for 11th Straight Win, 53-43

WALTHAM, Mass. – Holy Family University won its 11th consecutive game and ended Bentley University's four-game winning streak, 53-43 in non-conference women's basketball Monday afternoon on Barbara Stevens Court.

Bentley, which had been ranked first in the region and 14th in the latest WBCA Division II coaches poll, completed the 2023 portion of its schedule with an 8-2 record. Holy Family, eighth in the region, improved to 11-1.

It was a difficult offensive day for the Falcons as they shot only .259 overall and from three, turned the ball over 19 times and scored only 16 first-half points. Points were also at a premium for Holy Family most of the day as the Tigers shot just 32 percent overall and made only one of 13 three-pointers.

Holy Family took a lead it would never relinquish in the second when the Tigers strung together 11 unanswered to go up 19-12. Six of those were scored by senior center Carolyn Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.).

Sandwiched around halftime, Holy Family used a 9-0 run to go up 28-16 two minutes into the third. Junior guard Ava Morrow (Morgantown, Pa.) and sophomore guard Skyler Searfoss (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) each scored four during that span.

Bentley drew within four, 31-27, with four minutes remaining in the third with an 11-3 run. Included were three-pointers by senior forward Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), senior guard Brooke Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely HS) and graduate guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS).

Down nine after three, Bentley pulled to within five or six several times in the fourth but was never able to get any closer. The Tigers locked up the win by making nine of ten free throws in the final minute.

Junior forward Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington/Wilmington HS) led Bentley with 12 points and nine rebounds, including seven at the offensive end. Whitmore followed with ten points and eight rebounds, and Obar drained three triples for nine points. The rest of the team totaled only 12 points.

Sophomore guard Taylor Hinkle led Holy Family with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Searfoss followed with 12 points and three steals.

Bentley outscored the Tigers 21-3 from three-point land but was outscored 28-16 in the paint and 18-6 at the foul line.

Bentley's next game is Jan. 3, a home game against Assumption University.
