Rosa and Ortiz Score as Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Win Over Dominican in Home Opener

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2023) – Powered by goals from senior Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin) and freshman Angelina Ortiz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Dominican University in their 2023 home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (1-1-1) earn their first win of the season and win their second straight home opener. The Chargers (0-3) remain winless on the season. The victory was Interim Head Coach Jack Nicholson's first collegiate win.

Rosa scored her first goal of the season and fourth career goal. Ortiz scored her first collegiate goal and senior Kayla Camacho (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) dished out an assist. Sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made three saves to earn the shutout win.

Dominican was led by Isabella Wysocki who had a game-high four shots. Stella Paton made three saves to take the loss.

Mercy scored in just the second minute of action when Rosa nailed a shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar and bounced in to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks made it 2-0 in the 25th minute when Ortiz found the lower right corner of the net for her first collegiate goal, following a Camacho assist. The score remained 2-0 at halftime in favor of the Mavericks.

Anaya made two saves in the second half to preserve the shutout, giving Mercy the 2-0 win in their home opener.

Mercy held a 9-7 edge in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Dominican held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Interim Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 9th when they host Assumption at 1 p.m.
