Tightly Contested Game Ends in Disappointment for Firebirds

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team battled until the last second, but came up short in a 73-76 loss to Holy Family University at home. The Firebirds fell to 3-8 on the season and the Tigers improved to 7-6. Four Firebirds scored in the double figures, with Michael Aiken scoring a team high 14 points, Hartnel Haye and Kenyon Stone scored 13 points a piece and Eric Morgan Jr added 11 points. Jahmir Marable-Williams packed the stat sheet with 11 assists, 9 points, 6 rebounds and a steal. Micah Campbell pulled down a game high 11 rebounds, and made two blocks and a steal.

It was a back and forth affair in the first half, as both teams traded leads and tied at eight different times. The visiting Tigers were able to take a one point lead into the break.

The scoreboard was brought back in UDC's favor, as a jumper from behind the arc by Morgan Jr gave them the two point lead. That lead was however, short lived, as both teams went tit for tat with a few more lead changes and ties.

Holy Family began to pull away opening up an 11 point lead with 10:39 remaining. Just when it seemed the game was over, and fates were sealed, Marable-Williams knocked down the first domino of three's, and orchestrated Aiken's back to back three's, which tied the game 73-73 with just 36 seconds remaining on the clock.

With the possibility of forcing overtime or winning, the Firebirds turned up the heat on the Tigers defensively, forcing a potential clock violation. Unfortunately, HFU was able to draw a foul on a missed three, sending them to the charity stripe where they would seal the deal.

The Tigers out rebounded the Firebirds 40-33 and shot at 50% from the field, while UDC shot at 45.9%. The home team forced more turnovers (14-19) and was able to convert more points off of those turnovers (23-16). Up Next, UDC (3-8, 1-2 ECC) will take a break, before hosting Frostburg State in their last game of 2022, on the 30th. The game is slated to go off at 1:00 PM.
