Five Mavericks Record Multiple Kills as Volleyball Earns Straight-Set Win Over Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. (Sept. 5, 2023) – Powered by five Mavericks recording multiple kills, the Mercy University volleyball team earned a convincing 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-15) win over Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday night at the Jones Center.

The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the second straight year and defeat the Lightning (0-1) for the third straight time.

Mercy was led by senior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) who had a match-high 10 kills on .333 hitting with four digs and three aces. Senior Ayzaline Garay (Bayamon, P.R./Bronx School of Law, Government and Justice) had seven kills, seven digs and three blocks and senior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, Puerto Rico/Monroe College)had a match-high 22 assists. Freshman Mia Illes-Hair (Lake Worth, Fla./Palm Beach Central) had a career-high six kills on .364 hitting and junior Aitza Cruz (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico/Polk State College) had a match-high-tying eight digs. Graduate student Julia Pomerleau (Portland, Maine/University of Southern Maine) had four kills and freshman Bryton Hill (Clifton, Va./Robinson Secondary School) had a career-high three kills.

Goldey-Beacom was led by Piper Nanouski who had a team-high five kills.

The Lightning took a 1-0 lead in set one before Mercy scored the next five points to take a 5-1 lead. Goldey-Beacom battled back and tied the set at 7-7, but the Mavericks followed with seven straight points, capped off by an Illes-Hair kill, to take a 14-7 lead. Mercy later increased the lead to nine, 23-14, and held a 23-15 lead before back-to-back points gave them the 25-15 set one win.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set two. Mercy later held a 12-6 lead before going on an 8-3 run to take a 20-9 lead after a Pomerleau block. Back-to-back Goldey-Beacom points made it 20-11. However, Mercy closed the set with five unanswered points, finished off by a Schneid kill, to take the second set, 25-11.

Goldey-Beacom held a 5-4 lead in set three before Mercy rallied with six straight points to retake the lead at 10-5. A kill by Nanouski made it 10-6 before the Mavericks rattled off five straight points to take a 15-6 lead. Mercy later held a 20-9 lead after a Pomerleau kill before the Lightning scored four points in a row to make it 20-13. The Mavericks closed the set on a 5-2 run, capped off by a Schneid kill, to earn the straight-set win.

Mercy hit .247 with 32 kills, 26 digs, nine aces and five blocks and Goldey-Beacom hit -.071 with 17 kills, 32 digs, five aces and two blocks.

Head Coach Ana Todorovic and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, September 8th when they host Caldwell at 7 p.m.
