Women's Volleyball Splits Friday At Adelphi Tournament

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Daemen University women's volleyball team split Friday at the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament, first falling to Quincy 3-1 in the tournament opener on Friday morning before sweeping Wilmington 3-0 in their second match of the day. Daemen freshman Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) led the Wildcats on the day with 24 total kills. The Wildcats move to 6-3 on the season.
 
DAEMEN VS. QUINCY
The 5-2 Wildcats opened the 2023 Adelphi Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 12-25, 20-25) loss to Quincy on Friday morning. Fifth year senior Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) led the Wildcats with 15 kills on the day. The loss snapped Daemen's five-match win streak. Quincy's Emma Wijnbergen led all hitters on the floor with 17 kills for a .412 hitting percentage.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Burns led the Wildcats offensively for the first time in 2023, tallying 15 kills (3.75 kills per set) for a .190 hitting percentage. The outside hitter was just one dig away from a double-double, finishing with nine digs for a team-high 15 points.
  • Senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) posted double-digit kills for the fifth match this season, finishing with 13 kills (3.25 kills per set) while hitting at a team-high .308 clip. She added two block assists and one dig to her stat line, and finished with 14 points.
  • Reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) totaled eight kills, 11 digs and one solo block against the Hawks.
  • Senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) led the Wildcats with 25 assists (6.25 assists/set), one kill, two aces, and five digs.
  • Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted 17 digs (4.25 digs/set), five assists and two aces.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After Quincy got off to a hot start, leading as much as 5-1, Daemen went on a 7-3 run themselves to tie up the set. The Hawks and Wildcats traded points until Daemen scored six unanswered points to take a seven-point lead. Daemen won the first set, 25-17. Koerber and Burns combined for 10 of Daemen's 15 first-set kills, and the Wildcats hit at a .414 clip in the first.
  • The Hawks opened the second set much like the first, and took a 10-5 lead over Daemen early, but again, the Wildcats climbed back from behind. Led by Burns, Kuliga and Giraud's eight combined kills in the middle of the match, Daemen made it a one-point game. The Hawks took advantage of seven Wildcat errors late in the set to take the second, 25-21. Daemen had 13 kills and 13 attack errors in the second.
  • Quincy came into the third set with a vengeance, out-hitting Daemen 17 to 9 for a .455 hitting percentage. The Hawks took the third set 25-12.
  • The Wildcats trailed early in the fourth but put together a staunch effort to keep the game close. Ultimately, the Hawks outlasted Daemen's late push for a 25-20 fourth set victory to win the match, 3-1.
  • Despite being narrowly outhit 49-48 in the match, the difference was Daemen's 29 attack errors compared to just 18 for the Hawks. Quincy beat the Wildcats at the net with 22 assisted blocks compared to just four for Daemen.
 
DAEMEN VS. WILMINGTON
It was the battle of the Wildcats in the second match of the day, with Daemen taking a 3-0 decision (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) over Wilmington to finish the first day of the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament 1-1.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Koerber led the Wildcats offensively for the fourth match this season, posting a match-high 16 kills (5.33 kills/set) for a .286 hitting percentage. The freshman outside hitter notched her fifth double-double (kills-digs) with a 13-dig performance and added five aces to her 21-point outing.  
  • Burns finished with eight kills and 14 digs, while adding three aces on the day.
  • Brundage tallied a match-high 20 digs (6.67 digs per set) and finished with three aces.
  • Masic finished with 36 assists (12 assists per set), and added four digs, three kills and one assisted block.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen got out to a fast lead early in the match, leading by as much as 11-5 from the jump. DU kept the lead through to the end of the set, winning 25-18. Giraud tallied five kills on seven attacks for a .833 hitting percentage in the first set.
  • Daemen led for the majority of the second set, but Wilmington clawed their way back to take a 20-18 lead late. From there, Daemen scored seven unanswered points to take the second, 25-20. Koerber tallied six of Daemen's 12 second set kills. Brundage, Burns and Koerber combined for five aces in the set, with the two seniors each totaling two a piece in the set.
  • Wilmington got after it in the third and led from the start. Down 19-13, Daemen went on a 7-1 run, starting with junior Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) putting together a string of three straight kills, to bring the game within one. Daemen won five of the last six points to win the third set 25-22 and take the match 3-0.
  • The Wildcats out-killed Wilmington 46 to 31, as well as a season-high 13 aces.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats will play a pair of matches in the final day of the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. Daemen will play New Haven in a noon matchup, then wrap up the tournament playing host Adelphi at 2:30 PM.
