WILMINGTON, Del. - - The 2023-24 season came to a close for the Wilmington University women's basketball team on Saturday, falling to Goldey-Beacom, 92-55, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular-season finale at the Joseph West Jones Center.
With the win, the Lightning (7-21, 6-10 CACC) will return to the CACC Tournament as the South Division's No. 4 seed next week. The loss ends the Wildcats' season with a 2-25 overall record, 1-15 in the CACC.
The difference was a big 26-6 second quarter for Goldey-Beacom, as that gave them a 50-23 lead at the halftime break. Amber Washington ended the first quarter with a three-point play and then Trinity Brittingham hit a free throw to start the second quarter, bringing the Wildcats to within 24-18. But then the Lightning rattled off a 16-0 run in a span of 3:31 of game time, opening a 40-18 lead with 6:17 to play in the quarter. Another 6-1 run gave the Lightning a 46-21 lead and then they scored the final four points of the quarter as well, going into the halftime break, 50-23.
Goldey-Beacom then started the third quarter on a 12-0 run, making sure to not allow the Wildcats back into the contest. Goldey-Beacom went on to win the third quarter, 29-14, and take a 79-37 lead into the final frame.
Trinity Brittingham scored seven points in the fourth quarter while Azayah Garrison scored four points while grabbing six rebounds in the final 10 minutes. The Wildcats won the fourth quarter, 18-13, but it was too little too late for the Wildcats.
Amber Washington and Trinity Brittingham led the Wildcats with 14 points each, while Brittingham added four rebounds, three steals, and three blocked shots. Washington finished with five rebounds as well. Aniyah Bond scored nine points while Daja Claiborne added eight points and six rebounds. Azayah Garrison scored six points while leading the Wildcats with eight rebounds. Katie Bushong chipped in with three points, five rebounds, and three steals off the bench.
Saturday was the final game for seven Wildcats, as the program and administration would like to wish Trinity Brittingham, Katie Bushong, Hailey Downin, Azayah Garrison, Amaja Mack, Tanasia Miles, and Amber Washington all the best in their future endeavors.
