Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team picked up a key East Regional victory on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Wilmington University (Del.), 5-2, at the Riley Family Tennis Courts.
STAC improves to 11-5 overall, while Wilmington falls to 14-4.
The Spartans began the afternoon by taking two out of three doubles matches, as No. 1 Viktoriia Pavlovets & Kateryna Kryuchkova took a 6-2 victory over Valentina Ivankovic & Fenna to set the tempo. No. 2 Elita Silins & Jemima Parkinson would clinch the first team point for the maroon and gold with a 6-4 triumph against Marley Trifunovic & Alva Norberg. Once pairs play was settled, Wilmington's Jess Purdy & Larize Nel slipped past Amanda Kadiri & Samanta Villegas Robles at No. 3 to avoid the clean sweep by the maroon and gold.
Once the sides turned their attention to singles action, STAC took three straight matches to quickly send the visiting Wildcats to a rare defeat. No.3 Elise Semmartin beat Kushi Khandoji 6-0, 6-2, followed by No. 1 Viktoriia Pavlovets besting Jess Purdy 7-6 (4), 4-3. No. 2 Amanda Kadiri would then wrap things up with a three set triumph over Alva Norberg 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. To close the day for Wilmington, No. 4 Valentina Ivankovic handed Samanta Villegas Robles a three set defeat 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and No. 6 Larize Nel took down Kateryna Kryuchkova 6-4, 6-4. Elita Silins added to the Spartans' totals with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory against Marley Trifunovic at No. 5 to close the day's events.
