Volleyball Ends Weekend with Sweep of Holy Family

Springfield, Mass. - With contributions nearly across the board, the volleyball team concluded its appearance at the East Region Clash with a 3-0 victory over the Tigers of Holy Family University. Molloy ends the weekend with a record of 3-7 after falling in three to Saint Anselm College to start the morning.

How it Happened
  • The teams had an even back-and-forth to start the match, but a 10-4 run from the Hawks put Saint Anselm in front, 17-10.
  • Kills from seniors Kiarra Roth, Chye Davis, Colleen Moulder, and sophomore Aria Miller helped Molloy back to within three, 19-16, but a five-point run helped to seal the set in favor of Saint A's.
  • After five ties started the second set, the Hawks put together six-straight points to lead 13-7.
  • A block from Moulder and Roth paired with three-straight aces from Miller brought Molloy back within striking distance, but the advantage remained with Saint Anselm through to the end of the set.
  • Strong serving opened the final set in favor of the Hawks that Molloy was unable to come back from.
Top Performances
  • Davis and Roth each put up seven kills with Davis attacking at a .455 clip and adding two blocks.
  • Roth's 14 digs led the defense while putting up two blocks and two assists of her own.
  • Junior Angelina Scichilone had five digs while freshman Hope Carolan had four. 
  • Miller's three aces paced the squad while adding four digs.
  • Graduate student Mariana Donado Yepes had 20 assists, three digs, and one ace.

How it Happened
  • An ace from Donado Yepes and block from Moulder helped Molloy to an early 3-0 lead.
  • The teams would be tied four times before a five-point run gave the Tigers an 11-7 advantage.
  • Molloy remained within striking distance before back-to-back runs on strong serving from junior Rebecca Meier and sophomore Keri Carlin helped to knot the score at 16.
  • After three more ties, a run of four points, including kills from Roth and Meier and an ace from Carolan, put Molloy ahead, 23-20. 
  • Kills from Meier would end the set in favor of the Lions. 
  • The Molloy offense fired on all cylinders through the final two sets, including hitting at a .432 percentage in the second set. 
  • Trailing 9-8, the cardinal and white fired off 17 of the next 18 points, including seven kills from Roth, four from Moulder, two from Meier, and one from junior Roberta Monticelli, earning the 25-10 set victory.
  • Kills from Roth, Meier, and sophomore Sara Hiebert put Molloy in front, 6-5, in the final set.
  • The Tigers would tie the score on five occasions before a five-point run put Molloy in front, 17-12, including kills from Meier and Hiebert, an ace from Carolan, and a block from Roth.
  • The run would put Molloy in front for the remainder of the set, which was clinched on back-to-back points in the form of a kill from Roth and ace from Carolan.
Top Performances
  • Molloy had an advantage in all statistical categories over the Tigers, including a 43-20 advantage on kills and 7-2 advantage on blocks.
  • Roth led with 14 kills while adding six digs, two blocks, and one assist.
  • Moulder topped the team with four blocks and added nine kills, three digs, and two assist.
  • Meier had a career-high 15 digs to go with nine kills and two aces. 
  • Carolan led defensively with a career-high 21 digs while setting a career-high in assists (5) and aces (3).
  • Monticelli had an even five kills and five digs while Scichilone had seven digs.
  • In total, the Lions were able to score eight points off the strong serving of Carlin.
  • Donado Yepes and Hiebert each had three kills while the graduate student added 31 assists, nine digs, and two aces while the sophomore added a block.

Up Next
The Lions begin East Coast Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 23) as they host the Saints of D'Youville University at 12:00 p.m. from Quealy Gymnaisum. After the contest, the volleyball team will celebrate their newest teammate through Molloy's partnership with Team IMPACT in a draft day ceremony in the Hayes Theater.
