WILDCATS TAME MEN'S LACROSSE
Orangeburg, N.Y. (4/17/24) The Dominican University New York men's lacrosse team lost a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game to the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 18-7, this afternoon in a game played at Sister Mary Eileen O'Brien Field.
Following the game, Domincian now stands at 3-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
The Wildcat offense went to work early, scoring the first goal of the contest just forty seconds into play. WU then continued on their run with the next five scores to claim a 6-0 advantage with a little over four minutes left in the period.
Attacker Cole Vencak (Smithtown, N.Y.) got the Chargers on the board with 3:22 remaining in the first half with a goal off the dish from Sean Cosgrove (Warwick, N.Y.). Almost a minute later, junior Eric Greenwood (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) recorded his first game goal, following a pass from Cosgrove to make the score 6-2.
A 6-0 run by the 'Cats increased their lead to 12-2 with 7:09 left to play in the third quarter, but Kyle Benedetto (Wantagh, N.Y.) broke the run with an unassisted goal. Wilmington closed out first half play on a 2-0 run for a 14-3 advantage at the break.
The third quarter saw the Chargers outscore Wilmington 2-1 as James Conklin (Warwick, N.Y.) and Benedtto netted goals to see the Wildcats lead, 15-5 after three quarters of play.
A man-up opportunity saw Dominican score a goal with 13:43 left as Terence O'Loughlin (Nanuet, N.Y.) passed the ball to Cosgrove who was able to find the back of the net. The Chargers final goal came on a man-up opportunity as freshman Jack Sherry (Montgomery, N.Y.) recorded his first collegiate goal off the pass from Zachary Souza (Stratford, Conn.).
Dominican goalie Bryce Layton (Glenville, N.Y.) made a career high 18 saves in the loss.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they travel to CACC foe, the University of Bridgeport.
