Firebirds Defeat Goldey-Beacom En Route to First Victory of the Season

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team secured it's first victory of the season after defeating Goldey-Beacom College 99-92, Wednesday night at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex Gymnasium.

The Firebirds had four players score in the double figures, with Eric Morgan Jr and Michael Aiken leading the way with 18 a piece. Hartnel Haye just slightly missed out on a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing nine reblounds.

While it was the visiting Lightning that got on the board first with a free throw, it was the Firebirds that took the lead and ran with it the entire way. They extended this lead to as much as 15 points, before GBC cut it back down to just five, heading into half time.

Both teams turned up the offense coming off the break to score 50 plus points in the second half. UDC went on a run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 16 points, but the Lightning responded with a run of their own that cut that deficit to as low as three points, with just 13 seconds remaining. The Firebirds did not fold as they put the game away drawing three fouls and sinking six free thows to claim the victory.

Other noteworthy performances include Jahmir Marable-Williams and Tevin Curtis who both packed the stat sheet. Marable-Williams posted nine points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals. Curtis came off the bench to add 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Next up, UDC (1-1, 0-0 ECC) will host Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon, with a 2:00 PM tip-off time.
