ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Sunday during a tri-match at Dominican University. The Redhawks defeated Millersville University, 3-1 and Dominican, 3-2.
"Our girls are displaying a lot of heart, staying in matches, fighting back from deficits, and playing for one another," said head coach
Andy Braun. "We are sharing the ball, making better decisions and displaying lots of heart in big moments during the match. The ladies are making contributions when given the chance."
ROBERTS vs MILLERSVILLE (25-15; 30-28; 16-25; 25-17)
This was the second time the Redhawks have faced off against Millersville this season. In the fourth match of the season Roberts fell to Millersville, 3-1 during the PSAC East Kickoff Tournament. Roberts flipped the script on Sunday with a strong performance over the Marauders.
Roberts got out to a 2-0 lead, including a 30-28 win in the second set. The Redhawks made it to set point at 24-18, but Millersville used a seven-point run to take a 25-24 lead. Roberts rallied with back-to-back kills from
Laura Amaya and a service ace from
Teagan Weber to win the set.
After dropping the third set, the Redhawks responded with a dominant fourth set win.
Olivia Price had 19 kills in the match and Amaya added 11 kills.
Caleigh Schroeder had 41 assists.
On defense, the Redhawks combined for 71 digs with five players getting double digit digs.
Morgan Burnett led the way with 19.
ROBERTS vs DOMINICAN (25-12; 25-18; 22-25; 22-25; 18-16)
Roberts controlled the first two sets against Domincan. In the first set the Redhawks set the tone by jumping out to an 8-1 lead and later pushing that lead to 20-8. The team was efficient in the attack with a .423 hitting percentage. Roberts only made three attack errors in the first two sets.
Dominican found its way back into the match in the third and fourth sets as the Redhawks combined for 12 attack errors to give the Chargers life.
Roberts responded in the final set by grabbing a 4-1 early lead, but Dominican later responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 14-14. Price and
Celine Malosa closed out the set with back-to-back kills.
Malosa had 13 kills to go along with four blocks. Price added in 15 kills and 10 digs.
Weber led the team with 23 digs and added in two service aces.
NEXT UP
Roberts (3-6) will be at home for the first time this season on Saturday, Sept. 23 during homecoming. The Redhawks will host St. Thomas Aquinas at noon.
