STAC Softball Drops Two To Nationally Ranked Wilmington

Sparkill, N.Y. - Sara Miller's three home runs, including an inside-the-park grand slam, powered nationally ranked Wilmington University (Del.) to a doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas College today in non-conference softball action at Spartan Field. Wilmington won by scores of 12-1 and 12-4.

Wilmington, currently ranked No. 23 in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25, reached the NCAA Division II World Series last season and returned virtually the entire team this season. The two wins increased the Wildcats to 11-10. STAC fell to 7-13.

Miller, who hit 10 homers last season, slammed two homers in the first game to support the strong pitching of Kylee Gunkel.

Miller followed with an inside-the-park grand slam with the second game to break open a close game, Wilmington opened the scoring with five runs in the first inning but the Spartans rallied back behind freshmen Olivia Leon and Jessica Feerick. Elyse Marcano and Adriana Coira singled and Leon then lined a run-scoring single down the left field line. Feerick followed with a two-run homer over the center fence for her first collegiate homer. Miller's grand slam came in the fourth inning to highlight a five-run outburst.

STAC next hosts Felician University on Wednesday (March 20) in a non-conference doubleheader that starts at 2:30 p.m.
