Men’s Basketball Bests Mercy In Road Victory
Bridgeport got the best of the Mercy Mavericks in a 97-80 Tuesday night triumph.
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team got back to winning ways with a convincing 97-80 victory over Mercy University Tuesday evening. A close first half granted UB a four-point lead, but they never looked back in the second half, eventually growing the lead to 17 points and winning the game 97-80. The non-conference win improves Bridgeport's record to 2-3 overall.
The high-octane Purple Knights press was prevalent Tuesday evening as they forced 21 turnovers and scored 22 points off turnovers. Bridgeport also was able to work the paint well, outscoring Mercy 52-42 from the zone and kept things alive in possession with 21 second chance points compared to the Mavericks' 14.
UB was led by captain Jayden Iturmendi (Rs-Sr., York, Pa.) with his game-leading 25 points along with seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block.
Tim Dawson (Sr., New Haven, Conn.) had an extremely efficient night as he went 7-for-9 from the floor, 2-for-2 from three-point territory and 3-of-3 from the line for 19 points. He added four assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Sam DeSouza (Grad., Brooklyn, N.Y.) stepped up with 18 points as he went 7-of-10 from the floor and added seven rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.
Junior Denzel Luna (Orlando, Fla.) shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc as he chipped in 11 points, one rebound and one assist from the bench.
Captain D'Andre Collins (Sr., Newark, N.J.) ripped down a team-high 10 rebounds along with four steals, three assists, two points and one block.
Up next, UB will play next at home on Sunday, November 26th at 3:00 p.m. as they host Cheyney University for a non-conference clash.
