Spartans Struggle in 74-39 Loss to Holy Family

Philadelphia, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team had its share of struggles on both sides of the basketball, as the Spartans dropped a 74-39 road decision to Holy Family University on Wednesday evening at the Campus Center Gymnasium.

STAC falls to 1-2 overall, while Holy Family improves to 2-1.

Angelique Holguin led the way for the Spartans, recording 16 points, while Karolina Jaruseviciute posted a 10-point effort.

STAC shot 24.6 percent from the field (16-65), while Holy Family shot 45.0 percent (27-60) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Spartans recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Erin Leary, Sarah Ericson and Trinity Cheatom led the maroon and gold with two assists apiece on the evening.
  • Angelique Holguin made 7 of her 9 field goal attempts, while Karolina Jaruseviciute went 5-for-8 from the floor.
  • Holy Family out-rebounded STAC by a 52-35 margin, with Sarah Ericson grabbing a team-high eight boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up six steals, with the Tigers turning the ball over on 10 separate occasions.
  • The game featured one tie and two lead changes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Family opened a 4-0 lead, before Trinity Cheatom broke the shutout with a three-pointer to make it 4-3.
  • A Karolina Jaruseviciute layup with sevens minutes to play in the first quarter gave STAC its first and only lead of the game at 5-4.
  • Tied at 8-8, the host Tigers went on a 9-0 run over the next two and a half minute to take a 17-8 lead.
  • A final 10-5 streak gave Holy Family a 27-13 advantage at the end of 10 minutes of play.
  • Low scoring between the sides highlighted the second stanza with Holy Family putting up 13 of the 20 total points in the frame to hold a 40-20 lead at the half.
  • Sarah Ericson and Trinity Cheatom posted six first half points apiece for the Spartans, while Jessica Riepe led all scorers with nine points for the Tigers.
  • When the teams returned to the court for the third quarter, it would be more of the same low scoring totals as seen in the second quarter. Holy Family would put up 14 of the 23 total points to remain comfortably in the lead, 54-29.
  • In the fourth quarter Holy Family continued to cruise, building its largest lead of the game (35 points) at 70-35 in the final 90 seconds of the contest before closing things out to pick up the 74-39 non-conference triumph.
  • Angelique Holguin scored eight of her 16 total points in the final quarter, going a perfect 4-of-4 shooting.
