Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team battled the number 14 ranked Franklin Pierce University Ravens to a 2-2 deadlock on a stormy Monday night at Knights Field in a rematch of a 2022 NCAA Division II East Regional Semifinal contest. With the tie, UB stays unbeaten in its last three matches and moves to 1-1-2 overall. FPU is stays unbeaten at 1-0-2.
UB held a 1-0 lead at the half on Monday night as junior Angelina LoFranco (Greenacres, Fla.) scored her first goal of 2023 at the 39:49 mark of play when she picked off a Ravens' pass and sent a shot past goalkeeper Emilie Fox.
Franklin Pierce came out strong to begin the second half following a lighting delay kept the teams in their locker rooms for a 20 minute delay, as the visitors grabbed a 2-1 lead just 12:57 into the final 45 minutes of action.
The lead would hold up for the Ravens until the 70th minute when sophomore Solune Moll (Bern, Switzerland) put home a wonder strike of a long free kick to the top corner of the net to tie things up at 2-2, and that was how the match would end.
UB goalie Angelina Griva (Zakynthos, Greece) made five saves for the Purple Knights, and FPU's Emilie Fox had two stops. The Ravens outshot Bridgeport, 13-7, on the night and finished with and 8-4 edge in corners.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon at home when the Thomas Jefferson University Rams come to Knights Field for a 3:00 p.m. game to continue the Purple Knights' four-match homestand.
