Firebirds Battle Lions in Non-Conference Match Up

LAKEWOOD, NJ- the University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team fell to Georgian Court University 74-82, Thursday afternoon. The Firebirds fell to 4-8 on the season while the Lions improved to 2-10.

Four Firebirds scored in the double-figures with Eric Morgan Jr leading the way with 17 points. Tevin Curtis posted 13 points, Hartnel Haye (12) and Vernon Simmons (11).

The Firebirds struggled from the field shooting at just 24.2% in the first half. Despite winning the opening tip, the Lions knocked down the first two baskets to open an early 5-0 lead. It was a freshly substituted Elijah Crawford that was able to end the scoring drought, drawing back-to-back fouls and going 3-4 from the charity stripe. Morgan Jr made UDC's first two baskets from the field to make it a three point game with 13:35 remaining. UDC took their first lead of the game after a dunk from capbell and a three pointer from Morgan Jr. UDC went on another drought while the Lions continued to open up a lead which saw a high of 14 points heading into the half. 

The visiting Firebirds opened the second half with a strong defensive effort but was unable to execute their offense. GCU  went on to open up a 19 point lead after a 6-0 run with 14:15 to go. UDC was able to find their offensive footing over the next 13 minutes as they were able to cut the deficit down to eight with 1:27 remaining in regulation. The Lions were able to hold on, going on to win the match up 82-74.

UDC shot 34.8% from the field, 28.6% from behind the arc and 66.7% from the foul line.  The Lions shot 44.3% from the field, 82.8% from the charity stripe and 25% from the three-point line. Both teams pulled 42 rebounds and had 17 points off of turnovers. GCU had the advantage with 38 points in the paint compared to UDC's 28. 

Up next, UDC (4-8, 2-2 ECC) will host Wilmington (Del.) in their only home match up of the month on Monday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
