Firebirds Back in Win Column with 85-71 Victory Over Bloomfield

Washington, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team defeated Bloomfield College 85-71, to improve to 3-3 on the season. Four Firebirds scored in the double figures, to lead the Firebirds past the Bears.

Latavia Jackson led all scorers with 24 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Shanell Haskins proved to be the spark plug for the Firebirds, in her second start of the season, registering a season high 20 points. Destiny Ryles packed the stat sheet with 19 points, and team highs of 6 assists and five steals. Kensley Benjamin added 13 points in her first start of the season and Tori Williams flirted with a double-double posting 9 points and eight rebounds.

It was a slow offensive first-half for the Firebirds as they shot from 37.5% from the field in the first quarter and 25% from the field in the second. The visiting bears took the 34-27 advantage into the break.

The second half was a completely different story as UDC scored 58 points split evenly between the two quarters. The home team more than doubled their shot percentage from the field, and took control of the game with 5:11 to go in the third quarter after Jackson's made layup.

The Firebirds managed to slowly grow their lead in the fourth, to gain a a decisive 85-71 victory over the Bears.

Bloomfield had the edge on rebounds 38-34, resulting in more second chance points 22-18. UDC, however converted more points on turnovers 26-19 and had more points in the paint 44-36.

Next Up, UDC (3-3, 0-0 ECC) looks to gain their first conference win in a match up against St Thomas Aquinas at the E.B Henderson Sports Complex on Wednesday. The game is slated to begin at 5:30 PM.
