Brown's 13 Kills Paces Volleyball to First Win

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The volleyball team continued a crowded opening weekend of play by spliiting matches with the University of Charleston and Post University. The Lions fell 3-0 to the Golden Eagles of Charleston before sweeping the Eagles of Post to end the first week 1-2.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Eagles opened the contest on an 8-2 run.
  • A five-point run from the Lions that included three kills from senior Kiarra Roth and two from senior Colleen Moulder put Molloy in front, 12-11.
  • The teams would trade points back and forth until a kill from junior Roberta Monticelli and a service ace from freshman Hope Carolan gave the Lions a 17-15 lead. 
  • Tied at 24, kills from Patrycja Majos accounted for three of the final four points to give the first set to Charleston.
  • Molloy found itself down 8-2 once again to start the second set and was never able to overcome the deficit. 
  • Tied 5-5 in the final set, the Golden Eagles ran off 13 of 16 points to hold an insurmountable lead.
Top Performances
  • Roth led with 13 kills as well as three blocks while adding six digs and three assists.
  • Sophomore Aria Miller had 19 digs and seven kills while gradaute student Mariana Donado Yepes had 15 assists and five digs. 
  • Sophomore Angelina Scichilone led with three aces to go with seven digs and three assists.
  • Junior Julia Zalta tallied 12 assists, three digs, and one ace.

How it Happened
  • Back-to-back kills from senior Chye Davis helped the Lions to an early 4-3 lead.
  • Tied at 15, a string of nine-straight points, including two kills from Davis and two kills from Alex Brown, sealed the victory for Molloy.
  • Early in the second set, a kill from Roth and an ace from Donado Yepes guided the home team to an 8-5 lead. Although the teams would exhange back-and-forth three-point runs, the early advantage favored the Lions and put the squad in front by two sets.
  • The cardinal and white played from behind to start the third set, but a kill and a block from Moulder paired with a kill from Brown knotted the contest, 12-12.
  • Two kills from both Davis and Miller during a 6-1 run for Molloy put the Lions ahead, 21-16.
  • Three kills from Roth and one from Brown polished off the Eagles and landed Molloy its first win of the season.
Top Performances
  • Brown led the team with 13 kills, adding 10 digs for a double-double.
  • Donado Yepes (35 assists, 13 digs) and Roth (12 kills, 12 digs) also recorded double-doubles for the Lions. Donado Yepes added three aces and two kills to the stat line while Roth tallied three assists and two aces.
  • Scichilone paced the team with 16 digs as well as adding five assists.
  • Miller recorded 12 kills, 10 digs, three assists, and two aces.
  • Davis also put up 12 kills as well as a team-leading two blocks.
Up Next
Molloy heads to the campus of Wilmington University on Friday (Sept. 8) to partcipate in the Wildcat Regional Invitational. The first match will be against Holy Family at 7:00 p.m.
