Women’s Basketball Defeated In Season Opener
The Purple Knights were beaten Saturday evening by CSI in the 2023-24 season opener.
Staten Island, N.Y. – The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team lost their season opener to the College of Staten Island Saturday evening 56-59. The Dolphins outscored Bridgeport 22-14 in the fourth quarter to win the game by three points. The loss starts the Purple Knights off at a 0-1 overall record.
Bridgeport entered the fourth quarter leading the Dolphins by seven points. CSI shifted into another gear, going on a 15-0 run to take a 54-46 lead with 4:18 left on the clock.
The Purple Knights would get as close to stealing the lead back as one point, behind 57-56 with 12 seconds remaining. A pair of CSI free-throws grew the lead to three before a steal at the death sealed the deal for the Dolphins.
Bridgeport was led by a double-double performance from Senior Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with her game-high 21 points and 17 rebounds while adding two blocks, one assist and a steal.
Sade Young (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 12 points and two rebounds to the effort.
Guard Tariah Bryant (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) provided a game-leading seven assists in addition to her seven rebounds, three points and two steals. Classmate Shakira Hester (Bronx, N.Y.) ripped down nine rebounds along with eight points, three assists and two steals.
Senior Ayanna Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the rejection department, dishing out three blocks to add to her three rebounds and two points.
Up next, UB will challenge Franklin Pierce University on Sunday, November 12th at 1:00 p.m. at the College of Staten Island as a neutral arena.
