Purple Knights Weather Lightning Storm To Beat Goldey-Beacom In Four Sets
UB women’s volleyball start November off with a home conference win over Goldey-Beacom.
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team made it four wins in a row Saturday afternoon with their first of two matches at Hubbell Gymnasium. The Purple Knights defeated the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning in four sets. Goldey-Beacom took the opening set 25-22 before UB took sets two, three and four with scores of 26-16, 25-15 and 25-20 respectively. The win improves Bridgeport's season record to 20-6 overall and 13-2 in conference.
The Lightning came out with the more energy of the two teams, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Their largest lead would grow to six points, 13-7 before Bridgeport clawed back to level things at 18-18. The purple Knights could never quite steal the lead however and the Lightning would take set one, 25-22.
UB would settle down and execute at a higher level for the next three sets, winning by rather comfortable margins in route to the 3-1 match victory.
Freshman Hailey Jessen (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) once again led Bridgeport in the kill column with 13 and added one ace. Classmate Grace Presswood (S. Dennis, Mass.) supplied a team-high 15 digs and was just behind Jessen with 12 kills.
Another Purple Knight with 12 kills was Datari Mathis (Grad., Wethersfield, Conn.), the right-side hitter swung with a .391 kill percentage and added four digs and 2 block assists.
Middle blocker Madison Jongsma (Jr., Sanford, Fla.) was the most efficient in attack for Bridgeport, hitting at .583 kill percentage with eight kills, three digs, three block assists and two digs.
Setter Jaden Drollinger (Jr., Queens Creek, Az.) dished out 42 assists across the four sets with eight digs, four block assists and three kills.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will play their second match of the day, taking on Southern Connecticut State University at 5:00 p.m. for a non-conference clash.
