Firebirds Defeat Goldey-Beacom 68-52 in Season Opener

WILMINGTON, DEL.- the University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team defeated Goldey-Beacom, 68-52 to open their season with a win. The Firebirds improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Lightning fall to 0-1.

Tori Williams led the Firebirds in scoring with 16 points. Destiny Ryles and Nia Ford also scored in the double-figures posting 13 points apiece. Aiyana Ellis came off the bench and pulled down a team and game-high 11 rebounds while adding eight points. 

The Firebirds had their best scoring quarter in the second, scoring 20 points while holding their opponenets to just nine. 

The Firebirds shot at 31% from the field while the Lightning shot at 30.4%. GB had the edge in rebounds 52-48 and dominated in the paint with 32 points compared to UDC's 22. The visitng Firebirds forced 20 turnovers, while turning the ball over only 10 times.  They led by as much 21 points with 5:40 to go in the third quarter.

Up next UDC (1-0) will wrap up the weekend tomorrow with a match up against Wilmington, Del. The game ia slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
