NEW CASTLE, Del. - - A walk-off blast in game one propelled the offense to 22 runs in game one as the Wilmington University baseball team won its fifth and sixth straight games on Saturday, defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division leading Post, 9-6 (8 inn.) and 22-3, at Wilson Field.
Brandon Grygo finished off the comeback in the opener, launching a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. The offense carried that momentum into game two, scoring a season best 22 runs on 17 hits.
GAME 1:
The Wildcats struck early in the opener, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead after the first inning. A wild pitch started the scoring for the Wildcats but then Kory Pritchard went the other way with an RBI double inside the right field line. A sacrifice fly and an RBI ground out plated two more runs as the Wildcats saw themselves up, 4-1.
Post responded with a five-run fourth inning, turning the game around and leading 6-5. They scored on a two-run double, an RBI double, and a two-run single in the inning.
In the sixth, the Wildcats would find the tying run, as a one-out walk came around to score. Brandon Grygo doubled to put runs on second and third and then Tyler Pirrung hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 6-6.
Garrett Quinn left a two-out single on first in the top of the seventh and then worked around a leadoff single in the top of the eighth, leaving the runner at third base.
Mason DeLuca started the bottom of the eighth with a single and the Justin Hernandez put runners on first and third with a bunt single. Brandon Grygo stepped in and got the job done with a fly ball to the outfield, but the ball kept carrying and landed on the other side of the fence for a three-run walk-off blast.
Garrett Quinn got the win with two scoreless innings of relief while Zack Czarnecki, Steve Schenning, and Justin Barcoski all had scoreless appearances as well. Chase Fleming struck out six in 3.2 innings in the no decision.
Brandon Grygo went 2-for-3 with a walk, hitting a double and a homer, knocking in three while scoring three as well.
GAME 2:
The offense continued from the game-one walk-off, exploding forth 22 runs on 17 hits, scoring in every inning of game two.
The Eagles scored in the top of the first, but the lead didn't last long as the Wildcats answered right back in the bottom of the first. Kory Pritchard hit an RBI single before Erik Grady added an RBI groundout for the 2-1 lead.
With two outs int eh second, Jack McDonald hit a two-run single and then two batters later, Zach Walker hit a three-run opposite field homer to quickly make it a 7-1 game.
The Eagles cut into the deficit with a two-run third, but the offense answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third.
Now leading 10-3 going to the fifth, the Wildcats broke it wide open with a seven-run inning. Jack McDonald started the scoring with an RBI single into center and then Erik Grady hit a two-run single to the gap in left center. Chase Fleming hit a two-run double with the bases loaded and the Nick Classie capped the inning with a sacrifice fly and the Wildcats were on top, 17-3.
The Wildcats loaded the bases to start the sixth inning and the Zack Czarnecki hit an RBI single to right. Shawn Edevane put a bow on the game with a grand slam, hitting his first homer of the year to put the Wildcats on top, 22-3.
Xavier Cortez went the first five innings, striking out six while allowing one earned run on six hits and two walks for his first collegiate victory. Steven Mann and Alec Roselli had scoreless innings of relief in the nightcap.
Tyler Pirrung, Jack McDonald, Kory Pritchard, Zach Walker, Sean Glatts, and Shawn Edevane all had two hits in the game.
