BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Making their first appearance at home this season, the University of Bridgeport's softball team registered a doubleheader sweep of Dominican on Tuesday. The Purple Knights earned wins of 12-7 and 9-3 to move their CACC record to 2-2 this season.
Game One – Bridgeport 12, Dominican 7
Down 7-5 through four and a half innings, the Purple Knights erupted for seven runs in the fifth. In fact, it only took two swings as Charlee Horton launched a three-run home run and Meg McFarland hammered a two-out grand slam—all in the same inning.
When the dust settled, UB had recorded six total hits and two walks in the exciting fifth. They also enjoyed a huge second inning, scoring their first five runs of the game in that frame.
McFarland put together a monster stat line of 2-for-4 with six RBIs and a run scored. Horton also went 2-for-4, but with four RBIs, while Grace Derita finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Junior infielder Madison D'Amato reached base a team-best three times with a single and two walks.
On the pitching side of things, senior Kaite Burawski picked up her 47th career win in her 47th career complete game.
Game Two – Bridgeport 9, Dominican 3
The red-hot bats continued for UB in the second game of the day. The Purple Knights tallied 13 more hits in another decisive victory.
There were many of the same producers from Game One as Derita, D'Amato and McFarland all tallied two more hits apiece. McFarland finished the two contests 4-for-8 with six RBIs and three runs scored.
Angela Oros and Mya Jones joined the party as well with a combined four RBIs in Game Two.
Bridgeport's exclamation point came in the fourth inning when Isabella Benjamin launched her second home run of the year to put UB up 9-0.
Nine runs were more than enough for UB's starting pitcher Vise Zarate. The right-hander went the distance, allowing just three runs on eight hits.
Zarate has now allowed three or fewer runs in seven of her nine appearances this season.
