Spartans Stumble in 64-52 Loss to Chestnut Hill

Philadelphia, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team dropped its second straight game, a 64-52 decision to Chestnut Hill College, on Thursday Evening at Sorgenti Arena in the City of Brotherly Love.

STAC slips back to the .500 mark at 7-7, while Chestnut Hill improves to 9-5 on the season.

Sarah Ericson led the way for the Spartans, posting a team-high 12 points on the evening.

STAC shot 32.1 percent (18-56) from the field, while Chestnut Hill shot 44.9 percent (22-49) from the floor and 46.7 percent (7-15) from downtown.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Bailey Chapman led the maroon and gold with three assists.
  • Sarah Ericson made 5 of her 13 field goal attempts, while Emily Strunk was perfect from the field (2-of-2), the three-point line (1-of-1) and from the charity stripe (2-for-2)
  • STAC out-rebounded Chestnut Hill by a slim 35-32 margin, with Erin Leary grabbing seven boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up two steals, with the Griffins turning the ball over on 18 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over Chestnut Hill: Second Chance Points (12-4) and Bench Points (24-12).
  • The game featured four ties and three lead changes.

CHESTNUT HILL NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Bridie McCann led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 10-of-14 from the field and a blistering 5-for-7 from three. McCann earned a majority of her points (14) in the first quarter, where she hit buckets from beyond the arc on four separate occasions.
  • Meanwhile, teammate and fellow starter Avery White shot 50 percent from the floor and poured in 15 points of her own.
  • Kaitlyn Carter was a force on the defensive side of the ball for the Griffins, registering game highs in rebounds (11), steals (4) and blocked shots (2).
  • The host Griffins came out firing in the first quarter; shooting a red-hot 55.6 percent from the field, 80.0 percent from beyond the arc and 75 percent from the foul line.
  • Chestnut Hill has now won five straight, defeating Penn State-Abington, Goldey-Beacom, Felician, Holy Family and St. Thomas Aquinas.

St. Thomas Aquinas College will now turn its attention back to East Coast Conference play, visiting Roberts Wesleyan University on Sunday, January 14. The Spartans and Redhawks will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. inside of the Voller Athletic Center in Rochester, N.Y.
