Kerr, Gil Share Player of the Week Honors, Alexis Named Rookie of the Week
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 11, 2013) – USciences' Garret Kerr and Concordia's Argelix Gil have been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) Men's Basketball Co-Players of the Week while Philadelphia's Peter Alexis earned Rookie of the week honors for the reporting period ending February 10, 2013 the Conference announced Monday.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Garret Kerr (So., G, Moorestown, N.J.) USciences – Major: Physical Therapy
In the Devils only game last week, Kerr recorded his 14th double-double of the season with 33 points and 12 rebounds in the Devils 90-74 win over Washington Adventist. The Moorestown, New Jersey native made 11-of-18 shots from the field and was 9-of-11 from the free throw line. It was his fourth 30+ point game of the season and his third in the past four games. Garret also added a team-high five assists in the victory.
Kerr continues to lead the Devils and the CACC in scoring with 20.3 points per game and in rebounds per game with and 11.2 average. The physical therapy major also currently leads the Devils in field goal percentage (52.4%), free throw percentage (77.9%) and steals (1.4 per game). He is also second on the team in assists (2.6 per game) and ranks first among all NCAA Division II student-athletes with 14 double-doubles on the year.
The Morrestown, N.J. native also currently ranks fifth in the country in rebounding and 18th in scoring.
Argelix Gill (Sr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.) Concordia– Major: Liberal Arts
The Brooklyn, N.Y. native scored a career-high 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field (1-of-2 from behind the arc) and turned in a perfect 8-of-8 shooting performance from the foul line to guide his team to a 110-101 overtime victory over Bloomfield. In the win, Gill also tied his season-high of 18 rebounds and added three steals and an assist to his stat line in 42 minutes of action.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Peter Alexis (So., F, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) Philadelphia – Major: Psychology
Alexis—the CACC rookie of the week for the third time this season—recorded his eighth double-double of the year in the 60-59 loss to the Tigers on Feb. 6. He also shot 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the field and blocked two shots. Ten of his 13 rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor.
This season, Alexis is averaging 13.0 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting 59.9 percent from the floor and has blocked 39 shots. Alexis is second in the CACC in field goal percentage, third in blocks, and seventh in rebounding.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Marcus Porter (So., G, Wilmington, Del.) Goldey-Beacom – Major: Sports Management
Porter led the Lightning to an 86-83 overtime victory over Lincoln University on Wednesday, and recorded his second 30-point game of his career by scoring a season-high 30 points. The sophomore sports management major converted 11 of 23 of his shot attempts from the floor in the victory and matched his career-high by grabbing 14 rebounds as the Lightning earned their second victory in the last three games.
Porter has started 19 games for his squad and is currently the Lightning's leading scorer and ranks fifth in the CACC with a 17-point per game average. In addition, he ranks ninth in the CACC with a 7.4 rebounds per game average.
Alberto Munoz (Jr., G, Moorisville, N.C.) Holy Family – Major: Undeclared
Munoz paced the Tigers in a pair of victories in the CACC last week. The junior scored 16 points on 4-for-9 shooting from behind the arc in a 60-59 win over Philadelphia. He also pulled in nine rebounds and dished out two assists in the victory. On Sunday the Moorisville native scored a career-high 34 points in the Tigers' 89-72 triumph at Felician. Munoz connected on six of his 15 attempts from range and converted all 12 of his free throw attempts. He finished the week shooting 10-of-24 from beyond the arc.
Jerry Cummings (Jr., F, Queens, N.Y.) Post – Major: Sport Management
Cummings hit his first five field goals of the night and he scored a career-high 30 points as Post topped #25 Dominican 81-65 on Feb. 6. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to finish one shy of his fifth double-double of the year. In 38 minutes, the junior forward shot 12-for-18 from the field, 3-for-5 from distance and added two blocks an assist and a steal in the winning effort.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - Sophomore shooting guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) led Bloomfield in scoring for the third consecutive game in the club's only contest of the week, totaling 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting in Bloomfield's overtime road loss to Concordia College February 6. Junior point guard Dondre Whitmore (Trenton, N.J.) totaled 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a solid all-around effort, while sophomore Matt Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled 21 points off the bench in the setback. Rookie guard Erik Sanders (New York, N.Y.) totaled 16 points off the bench in the loss to Concordia, going 6-of-17 from the floor in the setback.
CALDWELL - The Cougars lost a close game at Nyack, 48-45 on Wednesday in their only action of the week. Sophomore guard Kevin Walker registered 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Michael Balkovic contributed 11 points, eight boards and two blocks, while senior forward Karel Thuwis added nine points and nine rebounds. Caldwell hosts Concordia on Tuesday and Chestnut Hill on Thursday in a game that was postponed due to the winter storm. The Cougars also play at Wilmington on Saturday.
CHESTNUT HILL - Senior guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, N.J.) ignited Chestnut Hill College, contributed 20 points to a 44-27 halftime advantage and seven three pointers to an eventual 86-67 victory over the Wildcats. Fellow senior guard Francis Ashe (Hyattsville, Md.) completed the Griffins two-headed monster, dominating the early minutes of the second half to score 12 of his 21 points in the closing frame.
CONCORDIA – Concordia captured a 110-101 OT win over Bloomfield on Wednesday evening as the Clippers scored 110 points for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Senior Argelix Gil (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career-high 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the foul line for the Clippers. He also tied his season-high with 18 rebounds and added three steals in 42 minutes of action. Senior Brandon Whitaker (Harlem, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 20 points while senior Lavor Morris (Bronx, N.Y.) added 18 points. Junior Norman Pope (Washington, D.C.) added 14 points as he currently has 989 career points and Holder added a career-high 14 points of his own. The Clippers shot 95.5 % (21-of-22) from the foul line and held a 47-34 advantage in rebounds.
For the upcoming week, Concordia (10-14, 6-8 CACC) will travel to Caldwell on Tuesday for their final regular season road game and then conclude the week hosting Philadelphia U. on Saturday afternoon.
DOMINICAN – The men's basketball team made their second appearance in the NABC/Division II Top 25 Rankings this week, holding down the 25th spot in the poll. The Chargers, currently 18-4 overall and 12-2 in conference play, lost their only contest last week, falling to the visiting Eagles from Post. Dominican's scheduled contest at Philadelphia University was postponed due to weather but has been re-scheduled for February 14th.
FELICIAN - Senior guard Anthony D. Green recorded season highs of 25 points and 7 rebounds in Felician's 89-72 loss to Holy Family. With 19 rebounds vs. St. Thomas Aquinas on Feb. 4, senior forward Antoine Obery became the first Golden Falcon to record 19 or more rebounds three times in a career.
GOLDEY-BEACOM – The Lightning posted their second win in the last three games with an exciting 86-83 overtime victory against Lincoln (Pa.) in a non-conference game at the Jones Center on Wednesday evening. However, the Lightning had their CACC contest at Nyack postponed on Saturday due to inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. Sophomore guard Marcus Porter led the Lightning to the victory by scoring a season-high 30 points while matching his career high with 14 rebounds en route to his second straight "double double." The Lightning's leading scorer with a 17.0 scoring average, the Wilmington, Del. native has scored in double figures in all 21 of his games this season. Meanwhile, freshman guard Gio Atkins tallied a season-high eight assists against the Lions on Wednesday night while adding five rebounds. Junior forward Will Williams came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points while contributing six rebounds. The Lightning will play two road contests this week. In addition to visiting Nyack on Wednesday night, they will travel to Dominican on Saturday afternoon for a clash against the nationally-ranked Chargers.
HOLY FAMILY – Holy Family (14-9, 10-4 CACC) picked up a pair of conference victories this past week as the Tigers defeated Philadelphia, 60-59, on Wednesday and then capped the week with an 89-72 victory at Felician. The win against the Rams marked the first time in program history that Holy Family recorded a season sweep of its cross-town rival. Against Felician, junior Alberto Munoz scored a career-high 34 points after knocking down six three-pointers. In the last four games, Munoz has drained 22 three-pointers. Senior Angel Ayala scored a career-high as well versus the Golden Falcons with a 20-point performance.
PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia (13-7, 8-3 CACC) was upended by Holy Family 60-59 on Feb. 6 in what turned out to be its one and only game last week. Saturday's home contest against Dominican (N.Y.) was postponed by Winter Storm Nemo. Freshman forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) had 21 points and 13 rebounds against the Tigers for his eighth double-double of the season, and fifth in the last six games. Freshman guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del.) netted 17 points. The Rams are eighth in Division II in turnovers per game (10.8). Philadelphia hosts Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday, Dominican in a rescheduled game on Thursday, and travels to Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday.
POST – Post earned its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2009-10 as it topped #25 Dominican 81-65 in a CACC contest at the Hennessy Center on Wednesday night. The Eagles got a career-high 30 points from junior Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) as he eclipsed 20 points for the sixth time this year. It was the second 30-point performance by a Post player this season. The last win against a top-25 team came at Stonehill on Dec. 19, 2009, a 74-68 decision in Easton, Mass. With the win, Post surpassed its win total from a season ago and stands at 14-9 overall and 10-6 in conference play. The Eagles are 12-1 this season when it pours in at least 70 points. Individually, Cummings finished a rebound shy of a double-double as he added nine boards and two blocks. He was 12-for-18 from the field and made his first five shots of the night. Junior Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, and sophomore Braxton Gardner (Bridgeport, Conn.) chipped in a career-high 13 points. For the fourth time this season, senior Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) turned in double digit assists. He had 10 on the night. Post will travel to Bloomfield on Feb. 12 and Washington Adventist on Feb. 16.
WILMINGTON - Wilmington was snowed out against Bloomfield on Saturday, meaning its only contest this past week was on Tuesday at Chestnut Hill. The Wildcats fell behind early and the Griffins went wire-to-wire to win 86-67 in the Wildcat's lone game. Brandon Fox led the Wildcats in scoring for the fourth time in five games, scoring 17 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor. Herb Dennis added 13 points, shooting 5-for-10 including 2-of-3 from three-point land. Both Fox and Dennis had a game high five assists. The Wildcats have one more away game this week before returning home against Caldwell on Saturday. Philadelphia is up next on Tuesday.
