Kerr, Gibbs Earn CACC Weekly Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (December 10, 2012) – University of the Sciences Garret Kerr (Morrestown, N.J.) has been selected as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) player of the week for the week ending December 9, 2012. Philadelphia freshman Andre Gibbs (Smyma, Del.) has been selected as CACC's Rookie of the week.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Garret Kerr, USciences (So., G, Moorestown, N.J.) – Major: Physical Therapy
Devil's sophomore guard Garret Kerr recorded his sixth and seventh double-double of the season in a tough 68-66 loss at Cheyney on Wednesday and in a 62-51 setback at Dominican on Saturday. Kerr currently leads the nation in double-doubles and was a CACC Honorable Mention last week.
The Moorestown native shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc to score 25 points against Cheyney. He also connected on all six of his attempts from the line and added ten rebounds, four assists and a steal in the losing effort. Kerr turned in another complete performance on Saturday, scoring 16 points on 62.5 percent shooting from the field in a loss at Dominican. The sophomore also contributed eleven rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in CACC action. For the week Garret turned in an impressive 20.5 points per game average, 10.5 rebounds per game, 4 assists per game and 2 steals.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Andre Gibbs, Philadelphia U. (Fr., G, Smyma, Del.) – Major: Accounting
Freshman guard Andre Gibbs led four Rams in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting in a 65-62 loss to Holy Family on Tuesday. Four days later, Gibbs turned in a career-high 22 points as he helped his team rebound with a 67-58 win over Nyack. On the week, Gibbs averaged 20 points per game on 50 percent shooting from the field, 5.5 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game. He also connected on all ten of his free throw attempts.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Mark DiRugeris jr., Chestnut Hill (Sr., G, Woodbury, N.J.) – Major: History
The senior guard scored 19 points in addition to grabbing six rebounds and offering an assist in a 74-66 loss at Wilmington University on December 4. DiRugeris remained a consistent scorer for the Griffins in a 1-1 week that concluded with a 70-66 overtime triumph over Post University. DiRugeris went for 21 points, two rebounds, an assist, and a steal while shooting 50.0% (5-of-10) from the field, 42.9% (3-of-7) from long range, and 80.0% (8-of-10) from the free throw line. Mark currently leads the Griffins as the league's sixth leading scorer with 16.7 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 12 assists, and eight steals.
Kevin Udo, Bloomfield (Jr., C, West Orange, N.J.) – Major: Nursing
Averaged 12.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game in a week where Bloomfield picked up an 88-78 decision against Felician and fell 69-64 at Dominican. Udo scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while handing out two assists and swatting five shots against Felician. The junior nursing major then scored eleven points and pulled in 12 rebounds while snagging two steals and three blocks in the loss to Dominican.
Cory Quimby, Dominican (Sr., C, Otisville, N.Y) – Major: Criminal Justice
Quimby averaged 13 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the Chargers. The senior from Otisville recorded back-to-back double-doubles of 14 points on 62.5 percent shooting from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds and a steal in a win over Bloomfield College (69-64). Quimby also had 12 points, 13 rebounds and a block in a victory over University of the Sciences (62-51). The senior center also connected on 56.2 percent of his shots from the floor for the week. Corey has posted double-doubles in his last five games and has six overall on the season.
CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM NOTES
BLOOMFIELD - The Deacons went 1-1 over the two-game week, picking up a home victory over North Division rival, Felician College, Tuesday night for their third conference victory the season. Junior forward Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) posted double-doubles in each contest, totaling 13 points, 15 rebounds and a game-high five blocks in the victory over Felician. Sophomore guard Matt Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled a season-high 22 points in the victory over Felician, continuing his string of solid play off the bench for Bloomfield. Junior guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) totaled 19 points in the victory, also leading the Deacons with 15 points in the club's loss to Dominican College Thursday night.
CALDWELL - The Cougars dropped a pair of league games last week, losing at Post and Goldey-Beacom. One bright spot for Caldwell was freshman guard Dawan Lighty, who scored a career-high 10 points against Post on Tuesday, then topped it with a 12-point performance at Goldey-Beacom on Saturday. Sophomore guard Kevin Walker delivered 14 points, six rebounds and four steals in the loss to the Lightning. The Cougars have one game this week, a CACC North battle with Felician at home on Saturday.
CHESTNUT HILL - Chestnut Hill College faced their first CACC South Division opponent to open the week at Wilmington University. The Wildcats came away victorious, 74-66, after leading the Griffins through a majority of the closely played affair. Senior guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, N.J.) and sophomore center Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, Pa.) headlined the Griffin effort, DiRugeris with 19 points and Radtke with a second straight double-double. On December 8, Chestnut Hill College led Post University at the end of a fast and furious first half, 32-30, and at the end of the regulation it was the penetration of DiRugeris and the hustle of Radtke that forced overtime, 57-57. That is where senior guard Francis Ashe (Hyattsville, Md.) took over the contest, scoring eight of his career-high, and team-leading, 22 points, in a 70-66 CACC triumph.
CONCORDIA - Concordia went 1-1 this past week with a loss to Holy Family and a victory over Nyack. In the 74-59 win over Nyack, senior Argelix Gil (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished the game with 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Clippers as he recorded his fourth double-double of the season. Junior Norman Pope (Washington, D.C.) also scored 22 points for Concordia and added a season-high eight assists. Sophomore Kyle Kube (West Babylon, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 10 points as the Clippers recorded 18 assists on 27 field goals. For the upcoming week the Clippers will travel to Southern Conn. St. on Saturday and then to Stonehill on Sunday in non-conference action.
DOMINICAN - The Chargers basketball team extended their winning streak to five games after posting a 2-0 week with wins over Bloomfield College and University of the Sciences. The team now stands at 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the CACC. Senior center Cory Quimby has posted double-doubles in his last five games.
FELICIAN - Felician senior F/G Antoine Obery has moved into sixth place all-time at Felician with 1,041 points. He also ranks on the Golden Falcons' career lists in rebounding (5th, 626), assists (5th, 240), blocks (5th, 58) and steals (8th, 88). Through eight games this season, Obery and his brother, Anthony, have combined to shoot 15 for 29 (.517) from three-point range.
GOLDEY-BEACOM – Currently 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the CACC, the Lightning dropped a 60-48 non-conference decision at Millersville on Wednesday night, but rebounded to snap a two-game losing streak with a 76-62 victory over Caldwell on Saturday. The victory over Caldwell was Goldey-Beacom's first home game since Nov. 20. Sophomore guard Charles Jackson made his first career start against Caldwell on Saturday and matched a career high by scoring 24 points, including 15 in the first half. Meanwhile, junior guard A.J. Picard moved into 13th place on the Lightning's all-time scoring list and has 626 career points. In addition, sophomore guard Marcus Porter earned the third double-double of his career by setting season highs with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Caldwell on Saturday. The Lightning will play two games this week, visiting Wilmington on Monday before hosting Washington Adventist on Sunday afternoon.
HOLY FAMILY - Holy Family (5-4, 2-1 CACC) made history this past week as the Tigers opened the week with its first ever victory over cross-town rival Philadelphia. Holy Family defeated the Rams by the score of 65-62 after dropping the previous 23 meetings. The Tigers capped the week with their first victory against Concordia (78-54) in the team's short history with one another. Holy Family entered Saturday's game 0-3 against the Clippers. Against Concordia, junior Alberto Munoz and sophomore Eric Fleming combined for ten three-pointers with each player draining five and scoring 19 points to lift the team to victory. In the first installment of NCAA Division II stats, junior Ervin Ezell ranks 1st among the nation's leaders in steals and steals per game.
NYACK - Nyack Freshman Miguel Martin averaged 7.5 points and 12 rebounds this week in Nyack's two games this week. The Warriors fell 74-59 to Concordia on Tuesday then dropped a closely contested game to Philadelphia (67-58) on Saturday. Freshman Tevin Evans came off the bench for Nyack to post a career-high 16 points in the loss.
PHILADELPHIA - The Rams sit at 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the CACC after splitting a pair of conference contests last week. Philadelphia started the week off with a narrow 65-62 loss to Holy Family in the Gallagher Center on Tuesday. Freshman guard Andre Gibbs led four Rams in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Four days later, Gibbs went for a career-high 22 points as Philadelphia rebounded with a 67-58 win over Nyack. Freshman forward Peter Alexis added 16 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. This week Philadelphia heads to Adelphi for a weekend tournament. The Rams face the host Panthers on Dec. 15 and the College of Saint Rose on Dec. 16.
POST - Post matched its NCAA Division II record with eight consecutive victories on Tuesday against Caldwell, but the Eagles had their streak snapped in a 70-66 overtime loss at Chestnut Hill on Saturday. In the 72-55 triumph over Caldwell on Tuesday night, junior Stephen Perry dropped a career-high 27 points on 7-for-13 shooting from distance. On Saturday, Post was limited to just 34.3 percent shooting from the field. Senior Jake Wilcox hit the game-tying layup with two seconds remaining in regulation, but the Eagles were outscored 13-9 in overtime. As of Dec. 2, Post is ranked in the top 30 in the country in six categories. The Eagles sit third in three-point field goals made per game (11.8), 14th in three-point field goal percentage (43.8 percent), 18th in blocked shots per game (4.8), 24th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.37) and turnover margin (5.3) and 26th in three-point field goal percentage defense (27.9 percent). The Eagles stand at 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the CACC.
USCIENCES - The Devils went 0-2 last week, losing by two at Cheyney University and by 11 at Dominican. Garret Kerr (Moorestown, N.J.) recorded double-doubles in both losses and leads the nation with seven on the season. On the week Kerr averaged 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting almost 61% from the field. The Devils will return to action on 12/19 when they host Holy Family University at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
WILMINGTON - The Wildcats were a last second shot away from going 2-0 this past week, picking up their first win of the year against Chestnut Hill on Tuesday. Junior transfer Dusaon Kojic led the team with 20 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the floor and went 6-of-7 from the foul line in the win. Brandon Fox added his second double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. WilmU fought back against Felician on Saturday, but fell 78-77 as they were unable to get a shot off at the buzzer. Herb Dennis led four players in double figures with 17 while Isiah Mason tallied 16 on 6-of-9 shooting off the bench. The Wildcats host cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom on Monday before hosting Lincoln University on Saturday for their final game before break.
