RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Monroe College sophomore Joel Sanchez of Hialeah, Fla., has signed a national letter of intent to continue his baseball career at Felician College, Felician head coach Chris Langan and Monroe coach Lou Melendez said today in a joint announcement. Sanchez committed to the Golden Falcons during the NCAA's early-signing period.
Sanchez, a 6-foot, 170-pound pitcher, went 3-2 with a 1.78 earned-run average as a freshman at Monroe, an NJCAA member. The right-hander allowed 34 hits, including no homeruns, in 43 1/3 innings and pitched three complete games for the Mustangs. Sanchez, who played scholastically at Monsignor Pace High of Miami Gardens, Fla., intends to major in business administration.
"Joel can throw his fastball consistently between 88 and 91 miles per hour," Langan said. "He has a very loose arm and also features a good curve and a hard slider. He has a good chance to be in our rotation right away."
Sanchez will join early-period signees Jonathan Arche (Miami, FL/John A. Ferguson), Vincent Kossack (Lake Worth, FL/Trinity Christian Academy), Joe Petosa (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood), and John Siedler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) as newcomers on the 2010 Golden Falcon squad.
Felician, an NCAA Division II member, is coming off a 26-24 won-lost record and its third consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament berth in 2008.
