PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (December 6, 2018) -- The Holy Family University Department of Athletics donated and presented 1,000 new children's books to Pennypacker School in Philadelphia in conjunction with its Build-A-Library community engagement initiative during an assembly on Monday morning.
Now in its 13th year, members of the athletic department staff along with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) took part in the annual assembly. The Build-A-Library initiative, which first began in 2006, has produced nearly 16,000 new books to 15 Philadelphia area schools.
"This has been our 13th year that we have done this initiative, and to still have the success we have had over the years is truly a blessing, said Associate Director of Athletics Robin Arnold. "The students and staff at Pennypacker School were very gracious and appreciative. The student-athletes from Holy Family who attended did a great job and spoke encouraging words to the students during the assembly."
Members of the athletics staff and student-athletes delivered the new books to Pennypacker to kick off the assembly held at the school. Dana Dockery (Women's Basketball), JoAnne Mamie (Women's Lacrosse) and Candyce Riley (Women's Volleyball) spoke at the assembly about the importance of reading and how reading helped with their development through school.
It's never too late to start planning for next year. If you have any new or slightly used children's books and would like to donate to next year's Build-A-Library project please contact Robin Arnold at rarnold1@holyfamily.edu or at 267-341-3675.
