Wilmington Claims Back-to-Back CACC Men's Cross Country Championships

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (October 23, 2016) -- Four Wilmington University men's cross country runners placed among the top 11 in the individual standings to earn All-CACC honors and lead the Wildcats to the program's second-consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship on Sunday morning at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, Pa. It marked WilmU's fourth league crown in the last five seasons.
Wilmington finished with a first-place score of 43 points to narrowly edge out second-place Bloomfield College, which turned in a mark of 45 points.
Ken Fontal was named the 2016 CACC Runner of the Year, as he won the individual title with a first-place time of 27:00.0 in the 8k race. The Wilmu harrier was also named to the All-CACC Team for his efforts.
Fontal was followed closely by Bloomfield freshman Isaiah Curbelo, who placed second with a mark of 27:21.9. In addition to earning All-CACC accolades, Curbelo was named the CACC Rookie of the Year for being the highest freshman finisher in the meet.
The other three Wildcats to earn all-conference status included Isaac Ndirangu (3rd, 27:34.8), Korey Jefferies (7th, 28:09.7) and Miguel Suero (11th, 28:38.9).
Three other Bears joined Curbelo as all-league honorees, as the list included Maurisio Nazario (5th, 27:57.0), James Menendez (8th, 28:24.8) and Marc Lugo (10th, 28:37.0).
The top-15 runners in the individual standings earned All-CACC status. The remaining student-athletes to finish among the top 15 to earn all-conference accolades included Sergei Cendo (4th, Philadelphia University), Mike Secreti (6th, Felician University), Patrick Parr (9th, Georgian Court University), Frank McGregor (12th, Chestnut Hill College), Eric Barton (13th, Chestnut Hill), Hussein Elmeshad (14th, Georgian Court) and Ethan Fadale (15th, Philadelphia).
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference is an NCAA Division II Conference composed of 14 institutions in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The member institutions are Bloomfield College, Caldwell University, Chestnut Hill College, Concordia (N.Y.) College, Dominican (N.Y.) College, Felician University, Georgian Court University, Goldey-Beacom College, Holy Family University, Nyack College, Philadelphia University, Post University of Waterbury, University of the Sciences, and Wilmington University.
