ATKINS, CASADO, BOWERS EARN TOP CACC VOLLEYBALL HONORS
Nyack Wins Team Sportsmanship Award; All-League Teams Announced

NEWARK, N.J. – Julia Atkins of Wilmington (Del.) College was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year and New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Angie Casado earned Newcomer of the Year honors in balloting released today. Rich Bowers of Goldey-Beacom College was named Coach of the Year by his peers. The voting was done by the league’s 11 head coaches.

Atkins, a sophomore middle hitter from King George, Va., breaks Bloomfield College’s eight-year stranglehold on the Player of the Year Award. She is the CACC’s leading hitter by percentage (.329) and is second in block average (1.14). Atkins’s Wildcats enjoyed their third consecutive undefeated league season and are the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Casado, who is third in the nation in kill average (5.56), wins the CACC’s inaugural Newcomer of the Year award. An outside hitter from Brick, N.J., she leads the CACC in kill average, is third in hitting percentage (.284) and fourth in service ace average (0.60). She was the AVCA National Player of the Week on September 20.

Bowers guided Goldey-Beacom to a third-place finish. The Lightning’s 18-15 overall record represents a seven-win improvement from 2003, and their 15-5 league mark is six wins better than a year ago.

The CACC’s annual Team Sportsmanship Award went to Nyack College, coached by Sheri Leegwater. The league also announced the all-CACC teams, which are listed below.
