CONCORDIA COLLEGE WINS 2009 CACC WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
FLOURTOWN, PA (October 16, 2009) - Top seeded
Concordia (N.Y.) College won the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis Championship with a 5-3 triumph
over No. 2
Goldey-Beacom College today at the Magarity Tennis Center in
Flourtown, PA. With the win, Concordia has claimed the CACC's
automatic berth into the 2009-10 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis
Regional Tournament. The win marks Concordia's first CACC
Championship, as the Clippers officially joined the conference this
fall.
Concordia won two of the three singles matches to start the day. The No. 1 team of Maria Ortiz and Yuliya Plevako won an 8-4 decision over Marina Sales and Blanca Sancho. The Clipper No. 2 team of Adeline Brennan and Camilla Xavier took an 8-2 win over Melanie Bonomo and Vanessa leon Velasquez. GBC took the point at No. 3 singles after Luciana and Daniela Pereira won by an 8-1 count over Maria Culaba and Jen Secular.
Plevako and Ortiz both earned their second points by winning their singles matches at the No.1 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Plevako defeated Bonomo, 6-0, 6-0, while Ortiz won a 7-5, 6-1 match over Sancho. Also earning a win for the Clippers was Xavier at No. 4, by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 over Velasquez.
The Lightning won their second point at No. 5 singles, as Luciana Pereira won in straight sets over Culaba. The Lightning also got a win at No. 2 singles as Sales earned a hard-fought win over Brennan, by scores of 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
The match between No. 6 singles players, Secular of Concordia and Daniela Pereira of GBC, was not finished due to Concordia clinching their fifth point prior to their match ending.
The CACC Individual Tournament has been canceled.
