WATERBURY, Conn. (November 8, 2014) -- The Philadelphia University women's soccer team set the tone of the day for the school on Saturday, as the Rams claimed the 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship with a 3-0 triumph over Post University at LaMoy Field in Waterbury, Conn.
The Rams, who also won the league's regular season title and was seeded No. 1 in the tournament, improved to 14-6-1 and earned the CACC's automatic bid to next weekend's NCAA East Regional Tournament at a site to be determined. Second-seeded Post fell to 12-5-1.
The win by the women's team came just hours before the men's team pulled off its own shutout victory in the CACC Championship, as it defeated Wilmington University, 1-0, in the nightcap. Following the men's win in the afternoon, both PhilaU teams joined each other on the field to celebrate the new conference hardware won.
PhilaU's women's team was led by an outstanding offensive effort from several players, including Patrice Faro, who scored the contest's first goal in the 21st minute off a nice assist from Michaela Van Antwerp.
Van Antwerp assisted on a pair of goals, as both her and Maro were named to the CACC All-Tournament Team for their impressive offensive efforts throughout the tournament.
Rams goalkeeper Courtney Shaw was not tested much early on in the CACC tournament, but when she needed to be in the final 45 minutes of Saturday's contest, she came up strong by making a save late off a scramble front in front of the net. She made two stops in the contest and was also placed on the all-tournament team for her efforts.
Shaw had a front-row view of an outstanding defensive effort put forth by the Rams throughout the entire tournament, as they did not yield a shot on goal in the first two matches before yielding just the two on Saturday.
Hannah Palese anchored a backend unit with her steady play, and was named the most valuable player of the championship for her consistent efforts. Meagan Yates was the other Ram to be placed on the all-tournament teaml.
