LAKEWOOD, N.J. (April 26, 2015) - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team won its third Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship in four years after defeating second-seeded Georgian Court University, 8-6, in the conference championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Holy Family, the top-seed in this year's tournament, ends its season with a 14-3 record as the Tigers extended its season-long winning streak to a program-best 12 games with the victory.
Georgian Court, which entered the game winning its last 10 contests, concludes its season at 11-6 overall.
Holy Family opened the game scoring four unanswered goals to take a 4-0 lead by the 14:21 mark of the first half. Junior Paige Settar and senior Christina Bonomo found the back of the net in the opening minutes to jump-start the scoring.
Junior goalkeeper Grace Deckert, who was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, held the Lions scoreless through the first 15-plus minutes of action. Deckert finished the game with seven saves and held Georgian Court to just three second half scores.
The Lions finally scored their first goal at the 14:21 mark when graduate student Taylor Reinecke scored an unassisted goal. Reinecke's goal shifted the momentum as the Lions went on to score three of the final four goals of the half to cut the Holy Family lead to 5-3 at halftime.
The Tigers maintained the lead throughout and gave themselves some breathing room with two goals to open the half. Senior Brianna Lancetta opened the scoring with her first goal of the game (25:17), while Settar followed with another score at the 19:34 mark to make the score 7-3.
Georgian Court answered with two goals in less than one minute to cut into the Tigers' lead once more. Graduate student Stephanie Gallo and junior Callie Brown tallied scores at 17:00 and 16:17, respectively, to adjust the score to 7-5.
Holy Family tacked on another score later in the half when Bonomo came through with her second score of the game with under ten minutes to play. Bonomo caused a turnover on defense to set up the goal scoring opportunity and give the Tigers an 8-5 lead.
Georgian Court added another goal at the 8:05 mark to cut the Tigers' lead to two goals (8-6), but that turned out to be the final score of the game as both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way.
The Holy Family defense allowed only three shots during that span with the final shot coming with four seconds to play as Deckert made the save to cap the Tigers' championship victory.
The Tigers forced 14 turnovers and were led by senior Kimber Kisselback, who recorded a season-high four caused turnovers to go along with five ground balls. She finishes her career with a program record 58 caused turnovers.
Senior Sarah Kelly, along with Deckert, Lancetta and Settar were named to the CACC All-Tournament team during the postgame awards ceremony. Georgian Court's Sylvetta Agosto, Brown and Gallo were also selected to the All-Tournament team.
