Holy Family Repeats as CACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament Champions

Lakewood, N.J. - The Holy Family University
women's lacrosse team defeated cross-town rival Philadelphia
University by the score of 12-10 to claim the 2013 Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Sunday afternoon at the
Georgian Court University Track & Field Complex.
The win marked the second straight season Holy Family won the CACC
Title as the Tigers conclude the season on a six game-winning
streak at 13-5. The team's last loss was versus Philadelphia
less than three weeks ago. The Rams conclude the year at 14-5
overall after a perfect conference regular season to win the South
Division Regular Season Title.
Seniors Maria
Mattioli (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Nazareth) and Stephanie
McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), along with
junior Brigit
LaRose (Lumberton, N.J./Holy Cross), sophomore Brianna
Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and freshman
Paige
Settar (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) were all
named to the CACC All-Tournament team for their performances during
this year's tournament.
Mattioli and LaRose each led the Tigers with three goals in
victory over the Rams. McNesby and Settar also scored
multiple scores with two apiece. Settar also picked up two
ground balls and caused a turnover.
Senior Jessica
Maloney (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) led the team
with three ground balls and caused a turnover on the defensive
side.
For Philadelphia, freshman Liz Mower led the team with four goals
to go along with an assist for five points. Mower was named
the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Juniors Libby Nichols
and Melissa Styer were named to the All-Tournament team.
Nichols finished the game with two scores to go along with a pair
of ground balls and four caused turnovers. Styer added a goal
and three ground balls.
Holy Family trailed 4-1 early on after Philadelphia opened the
game with three straight scores. Later in the half, Holy
Family went on to score four of the final five goals of the half to
tie the game at 5-5 entering halftime.
LaRose scored a man-up score with 10:47 to play in the first half
to make the score 5-3 and was followed by another man-up score by
McNesby at the 5:33 mark to cut the lead to one goal.
Less than :30 after McNesby's score, Settar came through with a
free position shot to tie the game at 5-5 to cap the scoring for
the first half.
In the second half, Holy Family grabbed the lead for the first
time after Mattioli scored a man-down goal off a free position shot
to give the Tigers a 6-5 lead at the 22:14 mark.
However, Philadelphia recaptured the lead after three straight
scores, including two free position scores by Mower to give the
Rams an 8-6 lead. Philadelphia's run was over a six minute
span with a goal by Nichols capping the rally with 16:26 to play in
the half.
As the half progressed, the Tigers eventually regained the lead
and held on to it for good. Holy Family used a 4-0 run to
lead 11-9 with less than three minutes to play.
Freshman Nicole
Braungart (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace) started the
rally with her first score of the game at the 8:36 mark and was
followed minutes later with the game-tying score by LaRose to make
the score 9-9.
Over a minute later, Holy Family took the lead with a Settar's
second score of the game with 3:16 showing on the clock. The
Tigers added another goal less than a minute later by Mattioli to
take a two-goal lead at 11-9.
With 1:05 to play in regulation, Philadelphia cut the lead to one
after sophomore Lauren Hartman scored her second goal of the game
to make the score 11-10.
On the ensuing possession, the Holy Family defense forced a
turnover with :24 seconds left on the clock and went the length of
the field as LaRose tacked on the game's final score with 1.6
seconds showing on the clock to seal the victory for the
Tigers.
Freshman goalkeeper Grace
Deckert (Jarrettsville, Md./Fallston) made ten saves for
the Tigers after facing 22 shots by Philadelphia. Holy Family
had 21 shots during the game.
Philadelphia had a slight edge with 15 ground balls, while the
Tigers picked up 11. Holy Family controlled the draws by an
11-7 margin.
Notes: This year's championship marked the team's
second straight CACC Title as the Tigers have qualified for the
CACC Tournament four straight seasons… Holy Family is now
2-1 all-time in the CACC Championship game…. Senior Stephanie
McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) finishes her
career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 211 points
(154G/57A)… She is also the program's all-time leader in
assists (57), draw controls (270) and caused turnovers
(48)…. Senior Jessica
Maloney (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) wraps up her
four-year career with a program record 159 ground balls…
Maloney also set a new single season record with 19 caused
turnovers this year… Freshman Grace
Deckert (Jarrettsville, Md./Fallston) set a new single
season record with the lowest goals against average in program
history at 9.43…. Head Coach Elizabeth
Weber is now the program's all-time winningest coach with
a 27-9 record, including 4-0 in the postseason.
