LAKEWOOD, N.J. (May 6, 2012) - Freshman Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J.) and fellow freshman Sarah Kelly (Washington Twp, N.J.) each scored four goals to lead No. 1 seed Holy Family University to a 15-10 win over No. 2 seed Georgian Court in the 2012 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Match on Sunday afternoon in Lakewood, N.J.
The title is the first for Holy Family in women's lacrosse and snaps Georgian Court University's steak of two consecutive conference lacrosse championships, as the Lions previously captured the CACC crown in both 2010 and 2011.
The opening half was a back –and-forth affair as it featured four ties and saw neither team trail by more than a pair of goals. Georgian Court took early control as it opened the scoring at the 29:28 mark on a score by Kerry Stadler (Matawan, Pa.).
Holy Family (14-4) responded with three unanswered goals, two off the stick of Kelly, to claim a 3-1 advantage at the 19:00 mark of the first half.
Georgian Court (12-7) stayed close as it tied the game at 3-3 with 12:51 remaining in the first half on the first of five goals on the day for Samantha Shaw (Howell, N.J.).
Maria Mattioli (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and Kelly gave the Tigers a two-goal lead once again as each netted a tally to make the score 5-3 with 8:02 remaining until intermission.
The Lions scored three unanswered goals to make the score 6-5 at the 3:11 mark of the half and seemed to have the momentum heading into intermission until Holy Family tied the game at 6-6 on a goal by Samantha Cornely (Washington Twp, N.J.) before following that with a score by Kelly with just six seconds remaining until halftime, to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead at the break.
Holy Family took total control with three goals in the opening 2:58 of the second half, giving them a 10-6 cushion.
Georgian Court fought back to get as close as 12-9 with 11:48 remaining in regulation on goals by Stephanie Gallo (Oceanport, N.J.) and Samantha Shaw (Howell, N.J.) but Holy Family ripped off three of the game's final four goals to secure the title.
Holy Family senior goalkeeper Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa.) made 12 saves in the victory and was named the 2012 CACC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Jenkins was joined on the CACC All-Tourney Team by Emily Ray (Philadelphia), Taylor Peltzer (Philadelphia), Rebekah McCurry (Wilmington), Molly McCourt (Georgian Court), Stephanie Gallo (Georgian Court), Samantha Shaw (Georgian Court), Brianna Lancetta (Holy Family), Stephianie McNesby (Holy Family) and Sarah Kelly (Holy Family).
