Georgian Court Claims Second-Consecutive CACC Women's Lacrosse Championship
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (May 1, 2011) -- The Georgian Court University lacrosse squad won its second-consecutive championship banner as the Lions charged past arch-rival Philadelphia University, 13-9, in Sunday afternoon's CACC Lacrosse Championship Tournament final.
The Lions (15-4) finish the stellar campaign with a 15-game winning streak. Since women's lacrosse became an official CACC sport in 2009, Georgian Court has reached the final game in all three campaigns (2010 vs. Holy Family; 2009 vs. Philadelphia).
Philadelphia's Taylor Peltzer gave the Lady Rams a lightning fast 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal just 18 seconds (29:42) into the contest. The Lions snared a 2-1 advantage with back-to-back goals from Molly McCourt (24:32) and Corinne Coyle (21:44).
Philly's Caribeth Shappell evened the contest at 2-2 at 19:30, but that would be as close as the Lady Rams would get the remainder of the afternoon as the Lions followed with four unanswered goals to make the score 6-2 at 10:25 remaining in the first half. GCU would take a 7-4 lead into halftime before winning the second half, 6-5, solidifying the crown .
Tournament Most Valuable Player Ryan McGrath ended her storied career with a game-high seven points (goal, six assists). Alley Abbate (two goals, two assists) and McCourt (three goals, assist) enjoyed four-point games while Daryl Carr (goal, two assists),Shannon Mastrogiovanni (three goals) and Coyle (two goals) contributed multi-point efforts.
Goalkeeper Jennifer Molzon, also an All-Tournament selection, collected six saves in 60:00, improving her season record to 14-4.
Stephanie Gallo (assist, five groundballs, three draw controls, two caused turnovers) and Olivia Rotunno (six caused turnovers, four groundballs) also earned All-Tournament recognition.
The Lady Rams end the campaign with a mark of 11-7.
