WilmU's Giovanni Marino Named 2022 CACC MLAX Player of the Year
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 26, 2022) -- Wilmington University standout Giovanni Marino on Tuesday was named the 2022 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Marino, who was also named All-CACC First-Team Attacker, earned the honors via a vote of the awards by the league's seven head coaches in the sport.
In addition to Marino, several other standouts earned major men's lacrosse awards from the CACC including Chestnut Hill College's Liam McCann (Rookie of the Year), Wilmington's Connor Graser (Defensive Player of the Year) and his teammate Jason Roland (Goalkeeper of the Year). WilmU's Christian Zwickert was named the CACC Coach of the Year, and Caldwell University earned the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award for demonstrating outstanding character and class during the regular season.
Marino leads the CACC in goals (47) and man-up tallies (7), while also ranking fourth in points with 56. He has scored multiple goals in nine games including seven in a row. Marino popped in a season-high nine goals while also adding an assist for 10 points in a win over nationally-ranked Saint Anselm on March 30. He also scored seven goals each in a pair of wins during the regular season.
McCann ranks third in the CACC with 42 goals and sixth in points (54). He scored a pair of man-down goals during the regular season to pace the CACC in that category. McCann scored a season-high six goals in a victory over Felician University on April 1.
Graser was tabbed the league's top defensive player by providing a steady all-around performance in helping to guide WilmU to the CACC Regular Season Championship. He also gained a spot on the All-CACC First Team at defender.
Roland led all CACC netminders with 10 wins, while also ranking second in goals against average (9.75), fifth in total saves (148) and fourth in save percentage (56.1%). He also landed on the All-CACC First Team as the goalie.
Zwickert guided Wilmington to the CACC Regular Season Championship with a 6-0 conference record. The Wildcats are 10-3 overall and ranked in the latest NCAA Division II North Region Men's Lacrosse Rankings.
