WilmU Rallies for 2nd-Straight CACC WTEN Championship
WILMINGTON, Del. (Oct. 23, 2022) – Top-seeded Wilmington University shook off a setback in doubles competition, and got four wins in singles play, to capture its second-consecutive title on Sunday with a 4-2 win over No. 2 seed Thomas Jefferson University in the 2022 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Championship Final at Delcastle Tennis Center.
Neus Ramos Moreno clinched the title for the Wildcats with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles which capped WilmU’s come-from-behind victory. Moreno was named the most valuable player of the championship, as she went 2-0 on Sunday, including a win in doubles action at the No. 2 spot.
Moreno’s singles win was the fourth and final one of the day for WilmU, as teammate Jessica Purdy got the string of victories started for the Wildcats, as she claimed a straight-sets (6-1, 6-2) win at the No. 3 spot versus Manni Zhang.
Valentina Ivankovic made it 2-2 in the team score with a triumph at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-4 over Nicole Hrbkova), and Carmelle Vial put the Wildcats in front at 3-2 with a straight-sets win against Natalie Wagner (7-6 [7-0], 6-2) at the No. 1 position.
Islay Thornicroft logged Jefferson’s lone singles win, as she won in straight-sets over Marley Trifunovic by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Jefferson got the day started by winning 2-of-3 singles matches to go up 1-0 in the team score. Wagner and Noelle Frenzel clinched the doubles point for the Rams as they downed Vial and Fenna Swaan, 7-5, at the No. 1 spot.
Wilmington locked up the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, which will be held in early May 2023 at a site to be determined.
