Laput & Latham Set Career Scoring Bests as No. 14 Bentley Puts on Shooting Exhibition

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Junior guards Zach Laput (Beacon Falls, Conn./Notre Dame HS) and Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) each established a new career scoring high, with 27 and 19 respectively, as the Bentley University men's basketball team shot past Goldey-Beacom College, 113-70, in the opening game of the 2022 Tournament of Heroes at the College of Staten Island Friday night.

Bentley's 113 points was a Tournament of Heroes record and the most for coach Jay Lawson's team since February 2016. It was also their most in regulation since February 2004 (116).

The Falcons shot an even 60 percent for the game, hit 69 percent of their first half attempts (20 of 29 with ten threes) and buried 18 of 29 three-pointers, a .621 success rate. The 18 triples was one shy of the school record and Bentley's effective field goal percentage was a sparkling .738.

Bentley's lead hit ten for the first time, 22-12, when graduate student Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School) buried a three-ball with about 14 minutes left in the first half

A 12-0 run made it a 38-20 game with eight minutes remaining until intermission. Graduate transfer Matt Leritz (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) accounted for five of the 12 with a lay-up and a three-pointer.

Another Wright-Kinsey three-ball pushed the lead over 20 for the first time, 53-32 with 2:42 still to play.

The advantage hit 30, 71-41, with 16:15 to play and once again, it was a triple by Wright-Kinsey that pushed the Falcons to that mark. At that point in the game, Bentley was shooting 68 percent overall and had buried 13 of 21 from outside the arc.

A Leritz dunk with just under nine minutes to play made it a 40-point game, 89-49, and the differential peaked at 48 on a trey by freshman Dan Becil (New York, N.Y./Worcester Academy) with 3:41 to play.

Laput's 27 points came on only eight field goal attempts, all of which he made. He scored 21 points in the first half without missing a shot, knocked down two triples and was nine of ten at the foul stripe. His night also included eight rebounds, six assists and no turnovers in 26:44.

Latham scored ten points in the first 5:20 and finished seven of nine overall and five of seven from downtown.

Also in doubles for Bentley were Wright-Kinsey, with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Leritz, with 14 points and eight boards. Both also had four assists.

The Falcons also received eight points apiece from graduate guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness HS) and seniors Isaac Martin (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross HS) and Kellen Bochenek (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont HS).

Goldey-Beacom was led by sophomore guard David Aikens (Absecon, N.J.) with 29 points.

The tournament continues Saturday with Bentley facing Wilmington (Del.) at noon.
