Bridgeport Earns Largest Point Total In Four Years With Win Over Cheyney
Men’s Basketball scored their most points since the 2019-20 season with a 118-72 victory over Cheyney University.
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport men's basketball offense came alive Sunday afternoon as they scored the most points in almost four years in route to a 118-72 triumph over the Cheyney University Wolves. All 15 members of the Purple Knights who registered minutes in today's contest contributed points to the historic effort. The non-conference win improves UB's overall record to 3-3 overall.
The Purple Knights faced off on Sunday with one of the most historic collegiate basketball programs in Cheyney University. The public historically black university ranked as high as seventh in all of NCAA Division II men's basketball all-time win percentage before leaving the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and competing as an independent program.
Bridgeport got out to an early lead and never looked back as they outshot the Wolves, shooting 50.5% from the floor to Cheyney's 42.6%. They doubled the Wolves' 23.8% from three-point range with a 51.4% conversion rate. UB dominated the paint in this game, ripping down 61 total rebounds to Cheyney's 31.
D'Andre Collins (Sr., Newark, N.J.) led all scorers with 26 points as he shot 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and 10-of-13 from the floor and added seven rebounds.
Sharpshooter Ryan Moore (Rs-Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 4-for-6 from three-point territory and 7-for-10 from the floor as he contributed 20 points along with six rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Denzel Luna (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) was a perfect 4-for-4 form downtown with his 12 points in addition to two rebounds and one assist from the bench.
Jayden Iturmendi (Rs-Sr., York, Pa.) provided 11 points to add to his team-high nine rebounds with three assists, two steals and one block.
Graduate Student Sam DeSouza (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 10 points with six rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Prince Dillon (Sr., Miami, Fla.) tore down eight rebounds under the back board along with seven points, two assists and one steal.
Up next, UB will play in their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest of the season on Wednesday, November 29th as they travel to Orangeburg, N.Y. to take on the Chargers of Dominican University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Hennessy Center.
