BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bloomfield College Bears men's soccer team held on for a, 4-3 victory over non-conference visitor, Shepherd University on Sunday. The Bears win was the first in a home opener since 2019 and evened their overall record at 1-1.
Bloomfield wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as
Abdoulaye Camara beat the Rams (1-1) keeper on his left side off a beautiful cross from
Matiss Zegele at the 3:04 minute mark. Shepherd would find an equalizer in the 37
th minute but the Camara, Zegele tandem switched roles just before the half with Matiss netting a goal off a pass from Abdoulaye to put the Bears up 2-1 at the halftime break.
Zegele thrilled the home crowd with his 2
nd goal of the day in the 55
th minute of the match and Bloomfield enjoyed a 3-1 advantage. The Rams continued charging forward and drew closer with a score less than a minute later but
Haitham Touma put the game out of reach on a set piece shot that sailed just over the visiting team's keeper to land in the back of the net.
Shepherd cut their deficit to 4-3 with a goal at 77:18 but the Bears defensive was up to the task and held the non-conference foe off the scoresheet the rest of the way. The Rams held a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal and a staggering 17-2 edge in corner kicks but Bloomfield's goal keepers,
Matthew Brun and
Jomar Vizcaino recorded 9 saves for the match and preserved the home win.
The Bears now set their sights on another non-conference opponent when Saint Thomas Aquinas College comes to Foley Field for a visit. Gametime is scheduled under lights with a 7:00 pm start time in Bloomfield.
