Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team ended its two-game skid on Tuesday evening with a 70-57 triumph over Post University at Aquinas Hall Gym.

STAC improves to 2-3 on the year, while Post drops to 1-3.

Sarah Ericson led the way for the Spartans, posting 18 points, while Erin Leary (15 points) and Trinity Cheatom (14 points) also scored in double figures.

STAC shot 41.8 percent from the field (23-55), while Post shot 32.2 percent (19-59) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Sarah Ericson, Trinity Cheatom, Erin Leary and Delaney Finnegan led the maroon and gold with three assists apiece on the evening.
  • Ericson made 4 of her 12 field goal attempts and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line, with Erin Leary hitting 5 of 10 shots from the floor.
  • STAC out-rebounded Post by a slim 37-35 margin, with Erin Leary grabbing a team-high eight boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up eight steals, with the Eagles turning the ball over on 14 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over Post: Points off Turnovers (16-14) and Points in the Paint (30-16).
  • The game featured seven ties and seven lead changes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Spartans and Eagles traded buckets early on, before a quick 5-0 run put the visitors ahead 10-6.
  • Trinity Cheatom's three-point play and layup, along with a pair of free throws by Kaitlyn Watrobski flipped the scoreboard in favor of STAC at 13-10 with 3:15 to play in the opening quarter.
  • A quick Post three tied things at 13-13, but Bailey Chapman's bucket plus a free throw in the final two minutes of the stanza gave the Spartans back the lead at 16-13 through 10 minutes of play.
  • STAC kept the scoring going early on in the second quarter, courtesy of Megan Fedor, Joline Raposo and Delaney Finnegan buckets to extend the maroon and gold lead to nine (24-15) and forced Post to use a timeout to settle the troops.
  • The Eagles rallied back to tie the score at 26-26 with an 11-2 streak and a tick over two minutes to play before halftime. However, another Megan Fedor layup, a Sarah Ericson free throw and a Trinity Cheatom buzzer-beating trey gave the Spartans a four-point advantage, 32-28 at the break.
  • Trinity Cheatom posted 10 points in the first half for STAC, while Maya Klein lead all scorers with 12 points for the Post.
  • Post opened the second half with a 6-2 run to tie things at 34-34, but an Angelique Holguin layup put the Spartans back ahead briefly at 36-34.
  • An Eagles three flipped the scoreboard back in the visitors favor (37-36). However, a Kaitlyn Watrobski layup and an Erin Leary three brought STAC back into the lead at 41-37.
  • A pair of Post free throws were quickly answered by back-to-back three-point buckets by Sarah Ericson and Erin Leary to give the maroon and gold a 47-39 advantage. Sarah Ericson would beat the third quarter clock with a jumper to push the margin to 10 (49-39).
  • A 7-0 run to start the final stanza cut the Eagles deficit to just three, 49-46 with eight minutes still left to play.
  • STAC would then go on a 14-0 run, highlighted by Erin Leary's seven points, Sarah Ericson's five points and Joline Raposo's two points to extend things on the scoreboard to 63-46.
  • One final push by Post (11-7) over the final three minutes of play would not be enough to overcome a basket by Karolina Jaruseviciute, along with late free throws by both Sarah Ericson and Trinity Cheatom to seal the win for St. Thomas Aquinas.
