Staten Island’s Big First Quarter Leads to Nonconference Victory over Women’s Basketball

NEWARK, Del. - - A big first quarter allowed the College of Staten Island to earn its first victory of the year, 80-31, over the Wilmington University women's basketball team on Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

It was an off-shooting night for the Wildcats (0-5) as they went 13-for-71 from the floor including just 1-of-17 from beyond the three-point arc. The Dolphins (1-4) shot 54.5 percent from the floor on their end, going 6-for-13 from beyond the three-point arc.

The Dolphins came out of the gates and put up 27 points in the first quarter, shooting 11-for-16 (68.8 percent) from the floor. They scored the first six points of the game and led 11-2 with 5:44 left in the frame. They took their first double-digit lead of the first quarter with 5:12 showing on the clock. The Dolphins went on a 13-0 run to lead 24-4 and held a 27-8 lead at the end of the quarter.

Daja Clairborne and Tanasia Miles scored back-to-back buckets for the Wildcats to start the second quarter, getting the deficit to within 15 points. But the Dolphins pushed the lead back out to 20 points before going into the halftime break leading 41-18.

After Daja Claiborne started the third quarter with an elbow jumper, the Dolphins went on a 17-0 run to take a 58-20 lead midway through the third frame.

Amber Washington hit a three-pointer and Fatou Ndou converted a free-throw in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats were outscored, 15-4, in the quarter to settle on the final score, 80-31.

Amber Washington led the team with seven points while adding a team high three assists. Trinity Brittingham added six points, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots while Azayah Garrison came off the bench and grabbed a team high nine rebounds while adding four points.

The Dolphins were led by Ashley Lambert's 20 points while Kyra Rose secured a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats have 10 days off before returning to game action. They travel to Elizabeth City State in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, for a 2:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, December 3. They then stop at Bowie State in Bowie, Maryland, on Sunday, December 4 for another 2:00 p.m. start on their way home.
