KEYSER SCORES CAREER HIGH AND LAYTON RECORDS FIRST CAREER VICTORY AS CHARGERS DEFEAT TROJANS
Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/9/24) The Dominican University New York men's lacrosse team earned their first victory of the 2024 season this afternoon over the Trojans of Virginia State University in non-conference action on O'Brien Field.
Sophomore Chad Keyser (Kingston, N.Y.) scored a career high five goals and added one assist for a six point game to lead the Chargers to victory. Freshman keeper Bryce Layton (Glenville, N.Y.) earned his first career victory in goal to improve to 1-3 on the season.
VSU keeper Jace Wiggins made 29 saves but suffered the loss to fall to 1-5.
James Conklin (Warwick, N.Y.) scored two goals and added a team-high three assists. Sean Cosgrove (Warwick, N.Y.) picked up five ground balls and scored one goal as well as adding one assist.
Patrick Roderka (Warwick, N.Y.) won 19 of 26 faceoffs and added a team-high 17 ground balls.
The Chargers opened the scoring with two goals early in the first quarter by Keyser and Cole Vencak (Smithtown, N.Y.).
VSU scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead. Dominican answered with five unanswered goals to regain the lead including a bomb of a goal by Sean Sullivan (Tappan, N.Y.) with two seconds left in the first half from DU's own defensive zone assisted by Brian Barker (Wyckoff, N.J.).
The Chargers continued their scoring run with three more goals to open the second half and extended their lead to 10-4.
The Trojans scored the next three goals to cut the DU lead to 10-7 but Keyser ended the run with his fifth goal of the game.
The Tojans scored the next two goals to bring the deficit back to two goals but the Chargers finished the game scoring three of the next four goals in the game on their way to a 14-10 victory.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they take on non-conference rival St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:00 PM.
