Baseball Drops CACC Contest in Rainy Matchup to Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (15-10, 4-4) had a delay in their contest with the Griffins that ultimately saw the Rams fall to Chestnut Hill College (8-19, 2-6) in a 10 inning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matchup on Thursday afternoon.

WHAT HAPPENED
Chestnut Hill scored in the top of the inning off of an error. The Rams responded with a Marquise Wood two-run homerun in the bottom of the first, pushing Jefferson up 2-1. The Griffins earned a walk with the bases loaded, adding a second score on the day and tying it up for Chestnut Hill. At the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded for Jefferson, the rain began to delay the matchup.

After it resumed, Joshua Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Justin Egner the room to make home plate and have it at 3-2 in favor of the Rams. The game would go scoreless for the next two innings, with Chestnut Hill threatening an opportunity to score in the fifth with runners on second and third base, but Jefferson held strong as they got the last out needed to maintain their lead.

The Griffins tied it up in the sixth with a double to left center, allowing a Chestnut Hill runner to make it to home plate. The Rams got the lead back off a pop up sacrifice fly by Matt Vita as Gabe Silva made it to homeplate and retook the lead for Jefferson. Chestnut Hill would not let this game go by them as a homerun in the top of the eighth evened it out once more at 4-4. After three Rams' batters were out, Chestnut Hill took the lead at the top of the ninth from a single to center field pushed the score to 5-4 in favor of the Griffins.

With one out and a pinch runner on third base, Alexander Angulo delivered a sacrifice fly to right field as Jordan Tiburcio made the run to score for Jefferson with the game now tied at 5-5 heading into extra innings. The Rams were not able to keep Chestnut Hill off the bases, as they had two walks and two hit-by-pitches that gave the Griffins a score. A double to right center tacked on three more runs as Chestnut Hill held onto their 9-5 lead and earned the win over Jefferson.
