Women’s Basketball Overcomes Molloy In Season Home Opener
The Purple Knights defeated the Molloy Lions 55-51 on Wednesday evening.
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team earned their first win of the season with a 55-51 victory over Molloy University. A strong third quarter brought the Lions back into the game, but the Purple Knights would ultimately prevail with a four-point margin. The non-conference win improves UB's overall season record to 1-2.
Bridgeport jumped out to a 33-17 halftime lead before the Lions outscored the Purple Knights 22-8 in the third quarter. UB dominated from behind the three-point line, shotting 36.8 percent compared to Molloy's 15.0 percent.
The Purple Knight offense was led by Stephanie McBride (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) and her 14 points. McBride had a stelar night under the boards, ripping down nine rebounds and blocking four shots while chipping in two steals and one assist.
Niyah Whitten (So., Bloomfield, N.J.) led the team from distance, going 3-for-5 form beyond the arc with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Senior Shakira Hester (Bronx, N.Y.) registered five baskets from the floor, scoring 10 points along with eight rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Up next, UB have a weekend off before traveling to Dobbs Ferry. N.Y. to take on the Mavericks of Mercy University on Tuesday, November 21st at 5:00 p.m.
