Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss Of The 2022-23 Campaign At Mercy On Tuesday Night, 82-77
Host Mavericks Close The Game Out On A 5-0 Run Over the Final 1:02 Of Action
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-A lay-up by UB's Mason Williams with 1:02 to play in the second half tied the game at 77-77, but the host Mercy College Mavericks closed the game out on a 5-0 run to post an 82-77 non-conference men's basketball win over the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Tuesday night. Tuesday's defeat is Bridgeport's first loss of the young 2022-23, as the Purple Knights are now 3-1, and Mercy earns its first win of the year, as the Mavericks are now 1-3.
Tuesday night was a seesaw contest that that featured 14 lead changes and eight ties. UB led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but Mercy battled back to take a 35-34 halftime lead.
Junior D'Andre Collins (Newark, N.J.) led Bridgeport with 18 points off the UB bench.
Collins was joined in double figures by sophomore Taj Chiles (Harlem, N.Y.) with 14 points, and senior Malcolm Moye (Windsor, Conn.) with 10.
Senior Ali Sumareh (Bronx. N.Y.) led Bridgeport on the glass with eight rebounds.
James Taylor Jr. led five Mavericks in double-digit scoring, as he netted 19 points for the winners.
Up next, the UB men's basketball team will travel to East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on Sunday to take on the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University at 3:00 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
