BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Beginning an eight-game stretch over the next six days, the University of Bridgeport's softball team earned a pair of wins (6-2, 9-1) over Chestnut Hill College on Saturday. The two victories push the Purple Knights' record to 8-2 in the CACC this season.
GAME ONE – Bridgeport 6, Chestnut Hill 2
Tied 1-1 through four innings, the Purple Knights put three across in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Hailey Kim, who finished 2-for-3, singled in UB's first run in the second while Mya Jones hammered an RBI double in the fifth.
Immediately after Jones' two-bagger, Isabella Benjamin would break things open with a two-run home run. Benjamin is now tied with Angela Oros for the team lead in home runs this season (4).
Charlee Horton and Meg McFarland joined Kim with two hits in the first game.
Senior Kaite Burawski was once again terrific in the circle. The left-hander struck out 11 batters in her 11th complete game this season.
Burawski only allowed two earned runs on four total hits. She currently ranks second in the CACC this season with 103 strikeouts.
GAME TWO – Bridgeport 9, Chestnut Hill 1 (five innings)
UB's offense erupted in the finale with a total of 15 hits. The Purple Knights put eight runs across in the fifth inning to end the contest.
McFarland's two-run home run in the fifth served as the final play of the day. She finished the day 4-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Grace Derita went a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game while Benjamin and Horton both added two more hits. All three recorded doubles in the contest.
All in all, nine different players tallied a hit and eight Purple Knights scored runs.
Vise Zarate pitched well across her five innings of action. The right-hander didn't allow an earned run and struck out a season-high eight batters.
